Kays and Jays wins Hurricane Bertie Zayat Stables' KAYS AND JAYS (Macho Uno) surged to the lead leaving the far turn and gamely withstood the charge of Tar Heel Mom (Flatter) in deep stretch to win Saturday's $125,000 Hurricane Bertie S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park. The four-year-old filly registered her first graded victory with the half-length decision, completing 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16 1/5 beneath Jose Lezcano, and she's now earned $308,030 from an 11-5-3-0 line. The Mike Mitchell trainee chased pacesetter Dr. Zic (Milwaukee Brew) through fractions of :22 3/5 and :45 2/5 before seizing command. She passed the six-furlong mark with a one-length advantage in 1:09 4/5, but Tar Heel Mom, who tracked the early pace four wide in fourth, continued to push the winner all the way to the wire. Warbling (Unbridled's Song) loomed a menacing presence behind horses on the far turn and altered course to the outside for a clear run in midstretch, but lacked a closing rally and settled for third, 1 1/2 lengths back of the runner-up. Kays and Jays paid $7.40, $4.20 and $3.20 as the slight 5-2 favorite and keyed the $44.60 exacta with Tar Heel Mom, who gave back $5.20 and $3.60 at 9-2. Warbling was good for $3.40 as the 5-2 second choice and capped the $125.40 trifecta. It was six lengths back to 7-2 third choice Pretty Prolific (Lion Heart), who completed the $318.60 superfecta (4-10-5-7) and was followed under the wire by Pious Ashley (Include), Dr. Zic, Don'ttalktome (Cactus Ridge), Way With Words (Sefapiano) and Turn Away (Empire Maker). Pinkarella (Malibu Moon) was withdrawn after capturing an allowance/optional claimer by 4 1/4 lengths on Friday. Bred in Kentucky by Milan Kosanovich, Kays and Jays is out of the Dixieland Band mare Lovin Spoonful, who is the dam of stakes vixen It's True Love (Yes It's True), an unnamed juvenile colt by Silver Train and a yearling filly by Master Command. Lovin Spoonful is a half-sister to multiple listed victress Bluebell Dancer (Sovereign Dancer) and hails from O My Darling (Mr. Prospector), who is a full sister to 1985 Preakness (G1) and Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Tank's Prospect. Fifth in the La Brea S. (G1) at Santa Anita in her previous start, Kays and Jays turned in her third consecutive strong showing on a dirt track. She finished second by less than a length in the Azalea S. (G3) at Calder and recorded a 9 1/2-length decision in the Richland Hills S. at Lone Star Park in her last two attempts on dirt. The bay also won the Cascapedia S. at Santa Anita last season and was second in the 2008 Monmouth N.A.T.C. Filly Futurity. She was purchased for $120,000 at the 2008 Barretts March Two-Year-Old Sale.
