Carlos charges late in Count Fleet Sprint Homewrecker Racing and Avalon Farm's CUSTOM FOR CARLOS (More Than Ready) had to dig deep for every ounce of class to prevail in Friday's $150,000 Count Fleet Sprint H. (G3) over a loose-on-the-lead Chief of Affairs (Yonaguska), and the 3-5 favorite did just that under Mike Smith. Unhampered while setting fractions of :22 and :45 1/5, Chief of Affairs opened up 2 1/2 lengths on the field in midstretch and briefly looking home free. But the favorite, who tracked in third along the inside early before moving outside for the stretch run, kept grinding away at that margin and was able to get his neck in front at the wire. Custom for Carlos returned $3.40, $2.80 and $2.20 after completing the six fast-track furlongs at Oaklawn Park in 1:09. Chief of Affairs, the co-second choice at 5-1, ran an outstanding race but was simply outclassed in this spot despite getting six pounds from the winner. He returned $4.80 and $2.80. Riley Tucker (Harlan's Holiday), also at 5-1, rallied for third, 2 1/2 lengths behind Chief of Affairs, and paid $2.80. The exacta gave back $15.40, the trifecta $39, and the 3-5-4-2 superfecta was worth $203. Native Ruler (Elusive Quality), Ez Dreamer (In Excess [Ire]), Silver Edition (Silver Deputy) came next while Cosmic (El Prado [Ire]) trailed throughout. This was the third graded stakes registered by Custom for Carlos, trained by Eddie Kenneally, who also took the Jersey Shore S. (G3) at Monmouth Park last July and the Mr. Prospector S. (G3) in January. He ended his sophomore season on a high note with a 3 3/4-length romp over his elders in the Bet on Sunshine H., and has also placed in the Swale S. (G2), Toboggan S. (G3) and Gallant Bob H. His scorecard now reads 13-6-3-1, $460,630. Bred in Kentucky by David E. Hager II, Custom for Carlos was produced by the stakes-placed Meadow Oaks (Meadowlake), who is also the dam of a yearling colt by Lion Heart. Custom for Carlos' third dam is the Grade 1-winning Plankton (Quack), the dam of Grade 2 winner and sire Buckley Boy (Alydar) as well as the ancestress of multiple Grade 1 winner Megahertz (GB) (Pivotal) and her Group 3-winning full sister Heaven Sent.
