MONMOUTH NOTEBOOK

JUNE 25, 2010

by Thomas Cassidy

There were 36 races contested at the Jersey Shore this past weekend and two of those races were maiden special weight events for two-year-olds. Both were won by Kelly Breen trainees. One was WILD ABOUT SONNY (Officer), who paid $7.80, and the other was SWEET DUCKY (Pulpit), who paid $4. Breen is one to keep an eye on in baby races as his stock comes out firing this time every summer.

The claim box is still yet to have an easy weekend as 29 horses changed barns this past week.

Friday had a 12-race card that consisted of a pair of grass events, both of which were won by stalkers. On the main oval, it appeared to be advantageous to be within stalking range of the early pace. There was only one winner who came from off the pace and that was in a Jersey-bred maiden claiming event.

It was the Eibar Coa show Friday afternoon as he won three races. Trainers Terri Pompay and Richard Dutrow Jr. shared the top honors with two wins each on the card.

The big talk of the afternoon was the Eddie Broome sensation PARTYALLNIGHTLONG (Put It Back), who was impressive yet again when taking a state-bred entry-level allowance. This runner drew off in hand to win by more than six lengths and remains on our Horses to Watch list. This colt was one of five winning favorites on the Friday card.

The rail on the main track appeared to be disadvantageous on Saturday afternoon as most of the winners on the card did not run on the inside part of the track. There were four turf events and three of those contests were won by stalkers with the other won from more than four lengths off the pace.

Each of the 12 races was won by a different outfit and Elvis Trujillo earned top riding honors with three victories. The public had three winners correctly favored.

Sunday's dirt races were dominated by speed/stalking type runners. The turf course played fair as there were two stalking winners, one front-running victory, and a closer out of the four grass events.

Kelly Breen earned the training award for the day with a pair of wins and three different jockeys each had two wins.
