Zenyatta 'dynamite' in three-quarter work

Dual champion and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) queen ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]) sizzled in a sharp six-furlong workout in 1:12 2/5 Thursday morning over Hollywood Park's Cushion Track in her preparation for an attempt to win her third straight Clement L. Hirsch S. (G1) at Del Mar on August 7.

From his Hollywood Park barn, the always-understated trainer John Shirreffs called it "a regular work," but did eventually say it was "very nice."

Regular rider Mike Smith, who was aboard for the work, was a bit more enthusiastic.

"She worked dynamite," he said. "It was one of her best in a while. She did it really, really well. I am very, very pleased."

Zenyatta worked in company with stablemates Sarbonne (Seeking the Gold) and Green Cat (Stormin Fever). Sarbonne supplied the pace to the turn, where Green Cat took over pacemaking duties. Green Cat and Sarbonne were officially only clocked for the initial three furlongs, earning a final time of :38. It was reported, however, that Green Cat was caught going three-quarters in 1:13.

Shirreffs confirmed that the Hirsch remains on Zenyatta's schedule for a next start. The six-year-old dark bay, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Moss, is 17-for-17 in her career and has won the Eclipse Award in 2008 and 2009 as champion older female.
