Evening Jewel puts on a show in San Clemente

Braly Family Trust's EVENING JEWEL (Northern Afleet) was made the 8-5 favorite in Sunday's $150,000 San Clemente H. (G2) despite the presence of fellow Grade 1 winner Crisp (El Corredor) and didn't disappoint her many backers with a game three-quarter length victory under jockey Victor Espinoza. The James Cassidy runner has now finished first or second in her past 10 races and finished up this one-mile affair in 1:35 1/5 on the firm turf.

Southern Fireball (Southern Image) tried to live up to her name by heading straight to the front, but found company in the form of Crisis of Spirit (Vindication). Nonetheless, the bay miss proceeded to set splits of :23, :47 4/5 and 1:12 1/5. Crisis of Spirit was drafting just to her outside while Fortunia (Leroidesanimaux [Brz]), Switch (Quiet American) and Evening Jewel formed a line across the track just in behind.

Evening Jewel utilized her outside running position to close on the top two while rounding the turn, and put the pacesetters away in the lane. She drew off in the stretch, comfortably holding the rallying City to City (City Zip) on the outside and Weekend Magic (Ecton Park) to the inside.

Evening Jewel was worth $5.40, $3.20 and $3.60 while keying the $22.30 exacta, $324.50 trifecta and $1,708.80 superfecta (6-7-4-1). City to City just nipped Weekend Magic by a head on the wire, paying $7.20 and $5.40 as the 9-1 sixth choice, while show gave back $10 at 27-1.

Fortunia was rank entering the turn and came over on Crisp, causing that rival to clip heels and stumble badly on the rail. However, Crisp managed to recover enough by the end of the race to rally for fourth by a head over Switch. It was just a nose back to It Tiz (Tiznow), who held Conniption (Ire) (Danehill Dancer) by that same margin on the wire. A nose was also all that separated Crisis of Spirit and Southern Fireball on the line, with Fortunia bringing up the rear.

Repo (In Excess [Ire]) was scratched while Got an Itch (Rocky Bar) and Our Georgia (Pulpit) didn't draw in from the also-eligible list.

Evening Jewel took three tries to break her maiden, finally getting the job done during last November's Oak Tree at Santa Anita meet. The bay lass then ran second against allowance rivals, but hasn't been out of stakes company since making her next start a three-quarter length victory in the filly division of the California Breeders' Champion S. She made her three-year-old bow in the Santa Ysabel S. (G3) on January 10, running second, and filled that same spot by a nose in the Las Virgenes S. (G1) behind Blind Luck (Pollard's Vision).

Evening Jewel shipped out of California for the first time for her next race, and proceeded to add a neck win in Keeneland's Ashland S. (G1) to her resume. The three-year-old earned a berth in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) with that score, and once more battled it out in the stretch with Blind Luck, who got her nose down on the line yet again. Evening Jewel returned to California, where she added a head triumph in the Honeymoon H. (G2) to her line last out, and with this one now boasts an 11-5-5-0, $696,943, career record.

Bred by Larry and Betty L. Mabee in California, Evening Jewel sold for only $8,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. The first registered foal out of Jewel of the Night (Giant's Causeway), she has an unraced juvenile half-sister named Maggie McGowan (Salt Lake) as well as a pair of Cindago half-sisters, a yearling and a 2010 filly. Jewel of the Night is herself a half-sibling to multiple stakes winners Saucey Evening (More Than Ready), who ran third in the 2009 Las Virgenes, and Petition the Lady (Petionville).

Evening Jewel's third dam is the winning Excellent Lady (Smarten), who counts among her progeny multiple Grade 1 king General Challenge (General Meeting), Grade 1 victress Notable Career (Avenue of Flags) and Grade 2-placed stakes scorer Western Hemisphere (General Meeting). Others of note in this line include multiple Grade 2 heroine Snow Dance (Forest Wildcat) and multiple Grade 1-placed Southern Halo (Halo), who is a successful sire.
