Starfish Bay represents U.S. in King George

The Americans will take another stab at English sprint success Thursday when the Todd Pletcher-trained filly STARFISH BAY (Elusive Quality) faces 16 others in the £100,000 King George S. (Eng-G2) on the third day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting. A victory by Starfish Bay, who most bookmakers have between 5-1 and 6-1, would be especially poignant given the fact she is a homebred who races for Gainesway, whose owner Graham Beck passed away in London on Monday.

Starfish Bay has won three of four starts this season, with her only hiccup coming against males when a close sixth in the Churchill Downs Turf Sprint (G3). She preceded that win with a score in the Ladies Turf Sprint S. at Gulfstream, and followed that setback with triumphs in The Very One S. at Pimlico and Candy Eclair S. at Monmouth Park. She will break from post 7 under Frankie Dettori.

Starfish Bay's trip to England comes on the heels of two starts in that country by the California-based Kinsale King (Yankee Victor). Hero of the Palos Verdes H. (G2) and Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) earlier this year, Kinsale King ran third in the Golden Jubilee S. (Eng-G1) at Royal Ascot last month but faded to 12th next out in the July Cup (Eng-G1) at Newmarket.

The main danger is the eight-year-old gelding BORDERLESCOTT (Compton Place), a two-time winner of the Nunthorpe S. (Eng-G1) who has run second or third in all four starts this season, including third-place finishes in the King's Stand S. (Eng-G1) and Temple S. (Eng-G2).

Also among the King George entries are the William Haggas-trained TRIPLE ASPECT (Danetime), winner of the five-furlong Sprint S. (Eng-G3) at Sandown on July 3; GILT EDGE GIRL (Monsieur Bond) from the Clive Cox stable and triumphant in the Ballyogan S. (Ire-G3) at Leopardstown on June 10; Richard Hannon's consistent performer ELNAWIN (Elnadim); and REVERENCE (Mark of Esteem [Ire]), a dual Group 1 winner in 2006 who has hinted at signs of a revival this year.

Post time for the King George, the second of Goodwood's seven races Thursday, is 9:45 a.m. (EDT). The race will be televised on HRTV.
