Baffert enters formidable trio in San Diego

Bob Baffert could have a three-pronged attack in Saturday's $200,000 San Diego H. (G2) at Del Mar. The Hall of Fame trainer has MYTHICAL POWER (Congaree) and SANGAREE (Awesome Again) set for the 1 1/16-mile event over Polytrack, and 2009 Pacific Classic (G1) hero RICHARD'S KID (Lemon Drop Kid), who is cross-entered to Friday's Cougar II H., is also part of the 10-horse field.

Richard's Kid is the horse to beat if he starts in the San Diego. A 24-1 upsetter in last year's Pacific Classic, the five-year-old horse opened 2010 with a victory in the San Antonio H. (G2). He finished 2 1/2 lengths back when seventh in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) in late March and returned from a lengthy freshening with a third in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) on July 10. The Zabeel Racing late-runner has trained well since returning to the seaside oval, registering a recent four-furlong bullet work in :47 1/5, and is the 122-pound highweight with Russell Baze.

Sangaree will enter in good form, registering a pair of runner-up finishes to Rail Trip (Jump Start) in the Californian (G2) and Mervyn LeRoy (G2) before a second in the seven-furlong Triple Bend (G1) last out, and will be regain the services of Martin Pedroza. Multiple Grade 3 victor Mythical Power will look to rebound from a fourth as the favorite in the Prairie Meadows Cornhusker H. (G2). Martin Garcia rides.

ENRICHED (High Brite) will wheel back off seven days rest from a third in the grassy Eddie Read H. (G1), and the Doug O'Neill-trained gelding drew the rail with new jockey Pat Valenzuela. Multiple Grade 2 winner BATTLE OF HASTINGS (GB) (Royal Applause [GB]), third in the Frank Kilroe Mile (G1) earlier this season but unplaced in his last two starts versus Grade 1 rivals, will make his synthetic debut for Jeff Mullins. Joe Talamo will replace the injured Tyler Baze in the irons.

Del Mar will also offer the $100,000 Fleet Treat S. a couple of races earlier on the program, and CAMILLE C (Roman Dancer) looks like the one to catch among 10 California-bred sophomore fillies. The multiple-stakes winning lass exits a third behind Switch (Quiet American) and Blind Luck (Pollard's Vision) in the Hollywood Oaks (G2). Other contenders in the seven-furlong test include DOWNHILL DIVA (Swiss Yodeler), EXCELLENT NEWS (Rahy) and REPO (In Excess [Ire]).
