Drs. K.K. and Vilasini Devi Jayarman's homebred HOLY HEAVENS (Holy
Bull) came three-wide into the stretch of Saturday's $75,000
Martha Washington S. at Oaklawn Park and pulled out a one-length
victory on the
wire. With Israel Ocampo aboard, the Benard Chatters pupil dueled late
with leader Scarlet Mist (Pure Prize) and just got the best of that
rival when completing the mile test on the fast dirt in 1:42 4/5.
Holy Heavens was earning her first stakes in this one, having made her
black-type debut a third-place effort previously in the My Trusty Cat S.
at Delta Downs. She entered that seven-furlong affair off a five-length
maiden win, and now sports a 7-2-1-1 mark having doubled her career
earnings to $86,440.
Scarlet Mist herself pressed Roma Jean (Bandini) through the opening
half-mile, eventually subduing that one and taking command. The 36-1
long shot in the field, she just couldn't hold the winner late, but was
3 1/4 lengths better than third-place runner Jazzin' Okie (Candy Ride
[Arg]).
Mazucambera (Milwaukee Brew), winner of the Dixie Belle S. in her
prior race, followed by another eight lengths, with Playgirl Prospect
(Running Stag) a neck farther back. Grandacious (Grand Slam), the 6-5
favorite, came next while Miss Kinderhook (Pleasantly Perfect) and Roma
Jean finished out the order under the wire. Summer Soiree (War Front)
was withdrawn. |
