Workers out in force for Hollywood weekend stakes

Bizzy Caroline brings a three-race winning streak into the American Oaks (Churchill Downs/Reed Palmer Photography)
Kentucky invader and last-out Regret S. (G3) victress BIZZY CAROLINE (Afleet Alex) fired a bullet on Sunday in her first work over the firm Hollywood Park turf in advance of next Saturday's American Oaks (G1). The dark bay miss was timed in :47 4/5 for the half-mile move under Rafael Bejarano, who will ride her for the first time in the 1 1/4-mile grass contest.

"She galloped out five furlongs in a minute," said Alan Shell, assistant to trainer Ken McPeek. "Rafael loved her."

Bizzy Caroline's June 18 Regret score at Churchill Downs was her third consecutive grass victory.

"She worked better on turf than on Cushion Track," said Shell in reference to a five-furlong drill in 1:02 1/5 at Hollywood on July 2.

Grade 2 heroine CAMBINA (Ire) (Hawk Wing), another American Oaks candidate, also worked four furlongs on the turf, clocking :49 2/5 for her trial. Trainer Jeff Bonde said that Martin Garcia, who won the race last year on Harmonious (Dynaformer), would be aboard Cambina for the first time. The Irish-bred filly finished third in both the Honeymoon H. (G2) and Senorita S. (G3) after three straight stakes wins on the Santa Anita turf.

Trainer John Shirreffs, who sent out Harmonious to victory last year, indicated that both STAR BILLING (Dynaformer) and NEREID (Rock Hard Ten) would start in the American Oaks. The two fillies completed drilled six-furlong works on Saturday over the Cushion Track, with Star Billing posting 1:12 3/5 and Nereid going in 1:13 2/5.

Star Billing, winner of the Senorita and runner-up in the Honeymoon, will be ridden for the first time by Joel Rosario. Regular rider Joe Talamo will be back aboard Nereid in her stakes bow.

ENTRUSTMENT (Forestry), runner-up in the Senorita and fourth in the Honeymoon, also worked six furlongs Saturday in 1:12 4/5. Alonso Quinonez has the call back for trainer Paddy Gallagher.

Next Saturday's Hollywood card will also feature the A Gleam H. (G2) sending distaffers sprinting seven furlongs. Both TANDA (Sweetsouthernsaint) and CHURCH CAMP (Forest Camp) readied for that engagement with five-furlong drills on the Cushion Track Sunday.

Dual Grade 3 queen Tanda pleased trainer Dan Hendricks when being caught in 1:00 1/5.

"She worked great; we're all set," Hendricks said of his four-year-old charge. The conditioner is hoping that Tanda, who was third in the Redondo Beach S. on June 5, will duplicate the form of her last stakes win in the seven-furlong Railbird S. (G3) last year. Victor Espinoza will ride the filly for the first time in the A Gleam.

Trainer Brian Koriner, who won his first A Gleam last year with Sweet August Moon (Malibu Moon), will try again with Church Camp, who worked five furlongs in 1:01 4/5. Riding arrangements are still pending for the Santa Lucia S. winner.

On Saturday, Milady H. (G2) winner ULTRA BLEND (Richly Blended) logged five-eighths in 1:01 3/5 for trainer Art Sherman in advance of the A Gleam, while Grade 2 heroine WASHINGTON BRIDGE (Yankee Gentleman) drilled the same distance in 1:00 4/5 for conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer.

SHOTGUN GULCH (Thunder Gulch), winner of the Madison S. (G1) at Keeneland in April, was vanned from Lone Star Park last week by owner-breeder C.R. Trout to trainer Bruce Jackson at Santa Anita for the A Gleam.

Trainer Peter Miller will be gunning for a sweep of two-year-olds stakes at six furlongs next weekend at Hollywood and sent out his hopefuls on Saturday and Sunday to put in their final drills. WOEBEGON (Saint Anddan) looms as a leading threat in the Landaluce S. for fillies on Saturday while MAJESTIC CITY (City Zip) should rule as the favorite in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G3) on July 17.

Woebegon, an impressive 3 1/4-length winner in her debut at five furlongs on June 26, prepared for the Landaluce by covering five Cushion Track furlongs in 1:00 Sunday with jockey Martin Pedroza aboard.

"She did it very easily and came home in :24 flat," Miller said, before adding that he also plans to enter STAYCLASSYSANDIEGO (Rockport Harbor), whom he claimed for $40,000 out of a 4 1/2-furlong maiden win at Hollywood on June 10.

Stayclassysandiego worked six furlongs in 1:13 4/5 on Sunday and will be ridden by Espinoza.

Majestic City, who is unbeaten in two starts and comes off a facile score in the Willard L. Proctor Memorial S. going 5 1/2 furlongs on June 12, will go for his second straight stakes win in the Hollywood Juvenile Champion.

"He will work Monday," Miller said of Majestic City, who will again be ridden by David Flores.

The trainer also plans to enter a maiden, HURRY HOME CLOVER (Bellamy Road), in the race with Garrett Gomez taking the reins.
