Bluegrass Cat captures the Remsen Taking the lead soon after the start of Saturday's $200,000 Remsen S. (G2), WinStar Farm's BLUEGRASS CAT (Storm Cat) withstood Flashy Bull (Holy Bull) in the stretch to score by 1 3/4 lengths at Aqueduct. With John Velazquez in the irons, the Todd Pletcher-trained juvenile was sent off the 3-5 favorite in the eight-horse field and returned $3.20, $2.60 and $2.30 to his backers. "He didn't break super cleanly, but he recovered well enough to dictate some reasonable fractions," Pletcher said. "We'll give him a few days and then head down south. He's come a long way in a short period of time." Bluegrass Cat and Velazquez maintained their rail position out of the gate, and soon found themselves on the lead with Flashy Bull just to their outside. The two colts stayed in that position through fractions of :24 2/5, :49 and 1:13 2/5. Entering the final turn, Congo King (Horse Chestnut [SAf]) tried to circle the top two, but couldn't keep up as they continued their own private race. Bluegrass Cat slowly but surely pulled away from his rival to complete 1 1/8 miles on the fast main track in 1:52 1/5. Flashy Bull paid out $8.50 and $4.30 while ending the $36.40 exacta for holding Parkhimonbroadway (Ecton Park) to third by 4 1/2 lengths. Show gave back $4.80 and the 1-8-4 trifecta was worth $173.50. Following the top three under the line were Park Avenue Prince (Siphon [Brz]), Fagan's Legacy (Monarchos), Congo King, Pegasusbystorm (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Immersed in Gold (Seeking the Gold) A Kentucky hombred, Bluegrass Cat is out of the unraced A.P. Indy mare She's a Winner, making him a half-brother to Grade 2 hero Lord of the Game (Saint Ballado) and a full brother to yearling and weanling colts. With Saturday's win, the bay now owns a 4-3-0-0 career mark, that also includes a win in the Nashua S. (G3) prior to this one, and $213,780 in lifetime earnings.
