Classic winner Samitar highlights Garden City

Samitar didn't have the easiest of trips when falling a neck short in the
Grade 2 Lake George in her U.S. debut. The Irish classic winner will have an
opportunity to make amends when she faces six other three-year-old fillies in
Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000
Garden
City over nine furlongs on the inner turf at Belmont Park.
Owned by Martin Schwartz, Samitar enjoyed a productive European campaign of
10 starts prior to her importation. Winner of the Group 3 Albany at Royal Ascot
and lucrative Tattersalls Millions Trophy at two, the British-bred registered a
12-1 upset of the Group 1 Irish One Thousand Guineas earlier this year in her
penultimate start overseas.
Samitar debuted stateside in the July 25 Lake George at Saratoga over 1 1/16
miles. Bumped early, the daughter of Rock of Gibraltar was nine lengths off the
pace downside, cut her margin of deficit down to a neck turning for home after
racing wide on the turn, and continued gamely to finish third in a four-way
photo.
A full-fledged member of the Chad Brown stable since that defeat, Samitar
will race with Lasix for the first time in the Garden City. Ramon Dominguez
returns to the saddle.
Tannery makes her U.S. debut in the Garden City for trainer Alan Goldberg.
The Dylan Thomas filly has shown a preference for soft ground this season,
winning three of her past four in Ireland. Her first stakes win, in the May 6
Victor McCalmont at Gowran Park, was later followed by a score in the Martin
Molony at Limerick against males, and the Group 3 Kilboy Estates at the Curragh
by a half-length in her most recent start July 22.

The main domestic challenge might come from Karlovy Vary. The Grade 1 Ashland
winner has won three of six on turf, but has yet to win a stakes on the surface
in two attempts. She exits an even performance in the July 29 Nani's Rose at
Saratoga, where she finished 1 1/2 lengths third as the 3-5 favorite.
Invading from the West Coast is Open Water, who crashed the exotics at long
odds in her last two. Second at 27-1 in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap, she
was most recently third at 25-1 in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks. She also placed
third in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes earlier this year.
Somali Lemonade was arguably the most exciting juvenile turf filly performer
in the east last year, but has failed to live up to expectations the past 11
months. She's placed in only three of six starts since taking last fall's Grade
3 Jessamine at Keeneland, most recently grabbing show honors in the Grade 2 Lake
Placid at Saratoga.
The Garden City field is rounded out by allowance winners Ciao Bella and
Trophy Wife.

Chad Brown will saddle two fillies one race earlier in the Grade 3, $150,000
Noble
Damsel, a one-mile Widener turf test for older fillies and mares.
Dealbata, whom Martin Schwartz had imported from France earlier this year,
already has two U.S. starts under her belt having won the Mohegan Sun during the
Belmont spring meet and running a fast-closing second in the De La Rose at
Saratoga August 4. New to the American scene is Kya One, a Group 3-placed stakes
winner in France.
Former European mainstay Julie's Love should attract plenty of support after
posting a three-for-four mark in the U.S. thus far. Her recent half-length tally
in the De La Rose was preceded by her only domestic loss to date, a solid third
in the Grade 3 Dr. James Penny Memorial behind the New York-bred aces Gitchee
Goomie and Hessonite.
Christophe Clement will saddle two in the Noble Damsel: Grade 3-placed
Federation, who captured a a third-level allowance at Saratoga last time, and
Naples Bay, who passed her second allowance condition at Monmouth Park in her
latest.

Completing the field are Grade 3 Eatontown winner Silver Screamer; La Cloche,
who captured the course-and-distance Voodoo Dancer two back; Group 3-placed
stakes winner Law of the Range, the trailer in the Grade 1 Diana her U.S. bow;
and Embarr, a state-bred stakes winner at Colonial Downs over the summer.
