AQUEDUCT NOTEBOOK

MARCH 21, 2013

by John Mucciolo

No graded events took place over the weekend at the Big A.

Track Stats

A total of 37 races were held over the Jamaica, New York, inner track, with favorites winning at a 24 percent rate and the top two betting choices combining for 54 percent of the wins during the week. Thirteen races were won in wire-to-wire fashion (35 percent).

Speed was good all week here, and could have been best on Thursday when four winners led throughout and three others tracked in second prior to taking over in the lane. Inner and middle posts accounted for 31 of the 37 wins this week.

HORSES TO WATCH

Thursday (3/14)

3RD -- CAIXA ELETRONICA (Arromanches) proved his versatility when gunning to the front and staying on throughout in a powerful tally for trainer Todd Pletcher. It's hard not to like the ageless eight-year-old.

4TH -- CLUSTER OF STARS (Greeley's Galaxy) makes this list again after a fine wire-to-wire romp to win her third straight for trainer Steve Asmussen. The four-year-old filly should be stakes bound in her comeback outing.

Friday (3/15)

4TH -- ALPHA J (Sharp Humor) was green early and pulling but seemed to get it together in the lane to finish a fine second at first asking. The Scott Schwartz trainee had a tricky post and went in for a trainer not very good with first time starters, so we considered this try a fine one and expect the sophomore to break her maiden soon.

Saturday (3/16)

6TH -- INCOGNITO (A.P. Indy) took over prior to the turn for home and strode home a solid 3 1/4-length winner under Mike Luzzi. The well-bred sophomore colt could have a nice future for himself for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and we also think he'll improve with distance.

9TH -- ELGHAYOOR (Ghostzapper) continued her ascension in the sprint distaff ranks on this day with a powerful late run to reel in the odds-on choice late in this stakes spot. The McLaughlin-trained sophomore finishes off six panels in a swift 1:09 4/5 in earning her first stakes win.

Sunday (3/17)

7TH -- WILD FINISH (Magna Graduate) put in a strong late run to be second while having little chance with the winner in this one and the Wesley Ward pupil is in very solid current form. Expect the colt to be a factor once again in his return.

A Look Ahead

Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Excelsior Stakes is the lone graded attraction at the Big A this weekend and racing will return to the main track next week.
