Mister Triester eyes Derby Trial

MISTER TRIESTER (Old Trieste), who could wheel back in next Saturday's Kentucky Derby (G1), is the top draw for Saturday's 82nd running of the Derby Trial S. at Churchill Downs. The Warren Stute-trained colt currently ranks 20th on the Kentucky Derby graded earnings list, and owner B. Wayne Hughes won last year's Derby Trial with Don't Get Mad (Stephen Got Even), who came back to run fourth in the "Run for the Roses."

Mister Triester set the early pace before holding on well for runner-up honors in the nine-furlong Illinois Derby (G2), but will face some talented three-year-olds in the one-turn, one-mile Derby Trial.

NOONMARK (Unbridled's Song), trained by Steve Asmussen, just missed by a neck to Derby-bound Sharp Humor (Distorted Humor) in the seven-furlong Swale S. (G2) at Gulfstream Park in his last start. The promising sophomore PROTAGONUS (Salt Lake) has won two of three starts for trainer Nick Zito, and the deceptively speedy SPOTSGONE (Bright Launch), out of multiple stakes producer Double's Lass (Mr. Leader), could surprise.

The field, from the rail out with jockeys, consists of R LOYAL MAN (More Than Ready), Jorge Chavez; NEW AWAKENING (Catienus), Casey Chavez; SMOKEYJONESSUTTON (You and I), Mark Guidry; Mister Triester, Brice Blanc; Protagonus, John McKee; Spotsgone, Earlie Fires; RECORD (Devil His Due), Rafael Bejarano; Noonmark, Shaun Bridgmohan; and DAWN OF WAR (Catienus), Rene Douglas.

Grade 1 winner Dawn of War will carry top weight of 122 pounds, R Loyal Man will shoulder 120, and the rest 116.
