Wilburn sires first winner Bilbrey Farms and trainer Steve Manley's homebred Simply a Treasure graduated in Saturday night's 5TH race at Fairmount Park, becoming the first winner sired by Grade 2 hero Wilburn (Bernardini). The 6-5 favorite in her fourth attempt, the Illinois-bred led at every call and widened her margin to 4 1/2 lengths at the wire. Juan Molina Jr. was aboard as Simply a Treasure covered five furlongs in 1:00.20 on the fast track. Wilburn is a half-brother to Grade 2-winning juvenile Beethoven (Sky Mesa). Out of of Grade 3-winning juvenile Moonlight Sonata (Carson City), they are bred along similar lines, both being by A.P. Indy-line stallions. Moonlight Sonata is herself a half-sister to another notable two-year-old in Bevo, victorious in the 1999 Saratoga Special (G2) and Futurity (G1). Topping the 2010 Keeneland April two-year-old sale at $625,000, Wilburn compiled a record of 9-5-0-0, $586,515. He strung together a three-race winning streak in the fall of his sophomore season, including the Smarty Jones at Parx and a 4 3/4-length conquest of the Indiana Derby (G2). The seven-year-old stallion stands for $6,500, stands and nurses, at Spendthrift near Lexington, Kentucky.
