Safari Queen strides clear in Orchid

Arindel Farm's SAFARI QUEEN (Arg) (Lode) took the lead a furlong out and pulled away to an impressive 1 1/2-length tally in the $150,000 Orchid H. (G3) over the Gulfstream Park turf on Saturday. Trained by Todd Pletcher and guided by Chris DeCarlo, the five-year-old mare tracked in third early on the rail before coming out into the lane and showing her class, finishing off 1 1/2 miles in 2:25 over the firm going. The 6-5 choice was worth $4.40, $2.60 and $2.20 while topping $1 exotics of $6.80 (exacta), $22.70 (trifecta) and $43.50 (2-4-5-6 superfecta).

Almonsoon (Giant's Causeway) rated between horses in midpack before putting in a solid run to finish second, one length clear of her nearest pursuer. The 4-1 third choice paid $3.40 and $2.60. La Dolce Vita (Quiet American) rallied well from last to earn third while never threatening the top pair. Show paid $3 for the 7-1 shot. Time On (GB) (Sadler's Wells) led briefly in early stretch but had little late, ultimately settling for fourth as the 2-1 second favorite. Bea Plus (Honor Grades) was another 5 1/4 lengths back and followed by Archstone (Arch) and Moon Berry (Brz) (Burooj).

The multiple Group 1-winning Safari Queen notched her third graded win since coming to the United States, and bumped her bankroll to $490,489 from a 14-8-3-0 lifetime mark. In addition to her two Group 1 tallies in Argentina, the chestnut owns wins in the La Prevoyante H. (G2), Long Island H. (G2) and Rumpipumpy S., with a placing in the recent The Very One H. (G3).

Bred by Santa Maria de Araras, the Argentinean-bred Safari Queen is out of the Group 1-winning mare Safari Girl (Sonus).
