Slew's Tizzy doubtful for Derby
Lexington S. (G2) winner SLEW'S TIZZY (Tiznow) is unlikely to run in the
Kentucky Derby (G1), trainer Greg Fox said Thursday.
"I've talked it over with the owner (Joseph LaCombe) and, unless something
radical happens, we are going to skip the Derby," Fox said. "It's just a lot of
money, and last year he thought his horse (Deputy Glitters [Deputy Commander])
ran great and ended up eighth. He just doesn't want to go through that again,
and I'm certainly not going to push him."
Fox said, unless there is a last second change of plans, Slew's Tizzy would
be pointed toward the Preakness S. (G1), the second jewel of the Triple Crown on
May 19 at Pimlico.

Trainer Darrin Miller reported that Julien Leparoux has the call on Lane's
End S. (G2) runner-up SEDGEFIELD (Smart Strike), whose Derby status has not been
confirmed.
"Right now, we are pretty much leaning toward the Derby," Miller said. "The
Crown Royal (American Turf S. [G3] on May 4) is a possibility, but we are
looking at the Derby."
Sedgefield is scheduled to work at Churchill Downs on Sunday or Monday with
Leparoux astride.
Trainer Mark Shuman said no decision has been made on whether XCHANGER
(Exchange Rate) will run in Derby 133. The conditioner did say, however, that
if the gray colt did run in the Derby, he would have no works before the race.
Xchanger won last Saturday's Federico Tesio S. by 4 3/4 lengths at Pimlico. He is stabled at Maryland's Fair Hill Training Center.
Southwest S. winner TEUFLESBERG (Johannesburg) galloped 1 1/2 miles beneath
part owner and trainer Jamie Sanders at Keeneland on Thursday. The bay colt has
$122,942 in graded stakes earnings and is No. 21 on the list of nominated horses
who are currently pointing toward the Derby. Teuflesberg is scheduled to work
at Churchill Downs on Saturday, but is entered in the opening-day Derby Trial S.
"I don't want to run in the Derby Trial, I want to run in the Kentucky
Derby," Sanders said. "I am going to wait until the last minute Saturday. If it
looks like we will get in the Derby, I will scratch and have the work."
