Songster retired to stud at Darley

Grade 2-winning sprinter SONGSTER (Songandaprayer) has been retired and will enter stud in 2008 at Darley. The four-year-old compiled an 8-4-3-0 mark with $367,740 in earnings.

The $200,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Yearling purchase quickly proved his worth, breaking his maiden at first asking and then running second to subsequent stakes winner Exclusive Quality (Elusive Quality) in his second career start. The black colt went on to win the Woody Stephens Breeders' Cup S. (G2) and Hirsch Jacobs S. (G3) while running second in both the Amsterdam S. (G2) and Bay Shore S. (G3) last season under the tutelage of trainer Thomas Albertrani. His only out-of-the-money placing came in his last start of the year when coming home fifth to Henny Hughes in the King's Bishop S. (G1).

Transferred to Godolphin for 2007, Songster only raced once for new trainer Saeed bin Suroor, posting a 2 1/2-length, wire-to-wire score in the Bold Ruler H. (G3) on May 12 at Belmont before his campaign was curtailed by injury.

"It's disappointing Songster won't be able to challenge for championship honors, but he's a really exciting stallion prospect," said Charlie Boden, Darley's nominations manager. "He's great looking, a natural athlete, with top class form and commercial bloodlines. It will be a thrill to welcome him to Darley."

Songster is out of the unraced French Deputy mare Peppy Lapeau, and he comes from the same family as 1986 Spinster S. (G1) winner Top Corsage (Topsider) and 1983 Meadowlands Cup H. (G1) hero Slewpy (Seattle Slew).

A fee for Songster will be set at a later date.
