First mare in foal to Smarty Jones
Multiple Grade 3 winner Forest Heiress (Forest Wildcat) is the first mare to be checked in foal to 2004 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness S. (G1) winner SMARTY JONES, last year's champion three-year-old who fell one length short of becoming racing's 12th Triple Crown winner in the Belmont S. (G1). Forest Heiress is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert McNair's Stonerside Farm, which is located near Paris, Kentucky. "We're thinking about roses in May," said Bobby Spaulding, manager of Stonerside Farm. "She was bred on her foal heat and we checked her this morning (Tuesday) at 12 days." The six-year-old mare won the Sorority S. (G3) and Valley Stream S. (G3) at two and delivered her first foal, a colt by 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, in late January. She was bred one time, on February 10, to Smarty Jones. As stipulated by the syndicate agreement, Smarty Jones' book will be limited to 110 mares, plus one Breeders' Cup season. The list includes Grade 1 winners Fantastic Look (Green Dancer), Heritage of Gold (Gold Legend), La Gueriere (Lord At War [Arg]), Mandy's Gold (Gilded Time) and Serra Lake (Seattle Slew); and the dams of Grade 1 winners Cuvee, Exogenous, Tactical Cat, Golden Ballet, Numerous Times, I Believe in You, Stephen Got Even, Distant Music, Silver Wagon, Volponi and Bevo. He is also booked to 17 mares that are full or half-sisters to Grade/Group 1 winners. Smarty Jones retired in August as the fifth richest racehorse in North American history, winning eight of nine starts and $7,613,155. "Smarty Jones has been as professional and proficient in his new career as he was on the racetrack," said Dan Rosenberg, president of Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Kentucky, where Smarty Jones stands. "As of this morning, he's bred 19 mares. He's a great horse and it's great to have him here."
