A field of seven will go forward in Sunday’s $150,000 Tom Fool H. (G2) at
Belmont. The cast includes multiple runners who would like to find themselves on
the early lead and for this very reason, we will go with SWINGFORTHEFENCES
(Boston Harbor). The bay four-year-old is coming off a two-month freshening
after a second-place finish in the Westchester H. (G3) over this same track,
earning a 110 BRIS Speed figure, the highest of his career. A cut back in
distance seemed to be what the Richard Violette trainee needed after winning his
first try at seven furlongs against allowance company two back. Regular rider
Shaun Bridgmohan has the call for this one.
SMOKUME (Smoke Glacken) enters off a victory in a handicap at Belmont despite
a troubled start. The chestnut gelding seems to relish the Elmont, New York,
track, compiling a record of 4-2-0 in eight starts here. Sunday’s distance will
be a stretch from what the Allen Jerkens charge is used to running, but we don’t
see the extra space proving much of a hindrance. If the chestnut can avoid a
rapid early pace, he could have his picture taken for his first graded score.
Chantal Sutherland will ride.
VOODOO (Petionville) is coming off a game second in the True North Breeders’
Cup H. (G2) to multiple Grade 2 winner Woke Up Dreamin (Holy Bull). Conditioner
James Jerkens and jockey Javier Castellano have accumulated three wins in their
last six outings together and Jerkens has the seven-year-old gelding training
forwardly for this one.
GADACE’S KHAMSEH (Piccolino) has a front-running style which could get him in
trouble, but could also give him the victory if the four-year-old chestnut
avoids pressure in the early going of this one. The Philip Aristone trainee exits
a pair of wins, the former in the Donald Levine Memorial H., and could bring a
price given his 15-1 morning-line odds.
The Bruce Levine-trained CLEVER ELECTRICIAN (Clever Trick) defeated a small
handicap field in his six-year-old debut last month over this same surface. The
bay has won three of his last four including the John Morrissey S. and General
Douglas MacArthur H. and could grab part here.
WILLY O’THE VALLEY (Will’s Way) will be making his second appearance for
trainer Juan Rodriguez, who took over training duties for Richard Dutrow. In his
last performance, the four-year-old turned in a less-than-desirable fifth in the
True North. He has room to improve here and should be considered for the
exotics. SHANIKO (A.P. Indy) has performed well against allowance and optional-claiming company but has not been able to put it together in the stakes waters.
We’ll go against.
