Multiple Grade 1 winners SOCIETY SELECTION (Coronado’s Quest) and STELLAR
JAYNE (Wild Rush) highlight a field of six entered for Sunday’s $300,000 Ruffian
H. (G1) at Belmont Park. A three-time Grade 1 heroine, Society Selection
captured the Shuvee H. (G2) and finished second in the Ogden Phipps H. (G1) at
Belmont prior to an unplaced finish in the July 31 Go for Wand H. (G1). A
breathing problem was discovered afterward and the four-year-old filly underwent
laser surgery to repair an entrapped epiglottis. She returned to the worktab on
August 15 for trainer Allen Jerkens.
Stellar Jayne captured the Mother Goose (G1) and Gazelle H. (G1) over the
track and concluded her sophomore campaign with a good third in the Breeders’
Cup Distaff (G1). Sold to new connections in November, the gray filly didn’t
return to the races until early July in the 7 1/2-furlong Misty Galore S. and
recorded an easy 6 3/4-length score. Conditioned by Saeed bin Suroor, Stellar
Jayne has earned more than $1.1 million and will be ridden by Jerry Bailey on
Saturday.
Multiple Grade 2 queen CAPESIDE LADY (Cape Town) will lead the post parade
for the 1 1/16-mile Ruffian under a 116-pound impost that includes John
Velazquez. Next comes Society Selection, Javier Castellano, 118; BENDING STRINGS
(American Chance), Gary Stevens, 114; HALORY LEIGH (Halory Hunter), Craig Perret,
116; Stellar Jayne, 119; and TAYGETE (Miswaki), Edgar Prado, 113.
