NYRA to offer new Grand Slam wager

Last updated: 4/19/06 4:51 PM

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) will offer a brand new, $1-minimum wager when
the Belmont Park Spring/Summer Meet begins on May 3. The Grand Slam features 27
ways to win, and will begin on the 5TH race during a normal nine-race card and on
the 6TH race during a 10-race program.

The concept of the Grand Slam is to get your picks to finish first, second or third in each
of the first three legs and then select the official winner of the fourth and
final leg. In the first three legs, equal weight is awarded to winning
selections but in the fourth and final leg, the selection must be the official race
winner.

In the event of a late scratch in any leg of the Grand Slam, the bettor will
receive the actual betting favorite. Place or show wagering must be available
in any of the first three legs of the wager for a horse to qualify as a winning
selection, meaning a horse that runs third in a race that only offers win and
place wagering will not be considered a winning selection.

“We think our fans are really going to take to this bet,” NYRA Senior Vice
President Bill Nader said. “In the past, our online game, SHOWdown, in which
the player had to pick one horse a day to finish in the money, was extremely
popular. Here, you get 27 chances to win by getting horses to run in the money
and then picking a winner.”

The SHOWdown contest for the Belmont Park Spring/Summer meet has been
canceled because NYRA is in the process of redesigning its website. The SHOWdown
contest is scheduled to resume for the Saratoga meet.
