Street Sense will meet Hard Spun in Kentucky Cup Classic

Last updated: 9/22/07 1:22 PM

Trainer Carl Nafzger confirmed Saturday that Kentucky Derby (G1) and Travers

S. (G1) hero STREET SENSE (Street Cry [Ire]) will run in Saturday's $350,000

Kentucky Cup Classic (G2) at Turfway Park. The 1 1/8-mile race will serve as the

final steppingstone toward the October 27 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Monmouth

Park for both Street Sense and Grade 1 winner HARD SPUN (Danzig).

Runner-up in the Kentucky Derby, Hard Spun exits a 1 1/2-length score in the

seven-furlong King's Bishop S. (G1) on the Travers undercard. The Larry

Jones-trained colt has shown an affinity for the Polytrack at Turfway, winning

the Lane's End S. (G2) by a convincing 3 1/4 lengths in late March.

Street Sense has never won over Polytrack. In two previous attempts, the dark

bay colt finished a good third in last year's Breeders' Futurity (G1) at

Keeneland and second by a nose in the Blue Grass S. (G1). Both times he went

from Polytrack-to-dirt successfully, winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) by

10 lengths and the Kentucky Derby by 2 1/4 lengths, and Nafzger is hoping to

follow the same pattern this fall.

The Classic serves as the centerpiece on Turfway's Kentucky Cup Day of

Champions program that also features the Distaff (G3), Sprint (G3), Juvenile

(G3) and Juvenile Fillies.

In its 13 runnings to date, the Kentucky Cup Day of Champions has produced

six Breeders' Cup winners and six Eclipse Award recipients.
