Formosina highlights day three of Tattersalls HIT

Last updated: 10/27/10 8:25 PM

This season's Railway S. (Ire-G2) winner FORMOSINA (Footstepsinthesand [GB])

was the star turn during Wednesday's third session of the Tattersalls Horses in

Training Sale in Newmarket when selling for 320,000 guineas. Saudi trainer Naif

Alatawi, seated with advisor Bertie Butler, signaled the successful bid on

behalf of owner Prince Sultan bin Mohammed Al Kabeer. The juvenile's former

trainer Jeremy Noseda was underbidder.

"He's a lovely horse and we hope he's lucky," Butler said. "Formosina will be

aimed at the UAE Guineas at the Dubai Carnival, and we've got him for the same

connections that we bought (Cornwallis S. [Eng-G3] winner) Electric Waves

[Exceed and Excel]) for (on Tuesday for 200,000gns)."

Formosina, who raced for owner Daniel Pittack, had been bought as a yearling

at Tattersalls 12 months ago for 105,000gns by locally based agent Kerri

Radcliffe.

Consigned from Noseda's Shalfleet Stables as Lot No. 1067, the

two-year-old colt was second in the Mill

Reef S. (Eng-G2) two starts back before finishing third in the £500,000 Tattersalls

Millions 2YO Trophy in his most recent start.

Anthony Stroud, thought to be buying for the Maktoum family, continued

shopping for the Dubai Carnival. Topping his list on Wednesday was the classy

three-year-old handicapper

ROCK N ROLL RANSOM

(Red Ransom), who was sold from Luca Cumani's

Bedford House Stables as Lot 1169

for 240,000gns. Jumping trainer Donald McCain was underbidder on the

colt, with Alastair Donald, of the Kern Lillingston, standing with new trainer

and Cumani's former assistant, Ed Walker, coming just behind in the pecking

order.

The sophomore is out of Zee Zee Top (Zafonic), queen of the 2003 Prix de

l'Opera (Fr-G1), and comes from the classic Meon Valley family of Reprocolor. He

has only run six times, but has scored in three of those starts, including a

classified stakes at Ascot.

Donald had been underbidder earlier on Lot 966, the three-year-old MOUNT

ATHOS (Montjeu [Ire]), a York handicap winner for trainer John Hills consigned

by The Croft Stables. Stephen Hillen, acting for owner Dr. Marwan Koukash, was

the successful bidder this time at 190,000gns.

"He is going to David Wachman's yard in Ireland and he was my pick of the

sale, although we probably paid a premium for him," said Hillen, who acts as

Koukash's racing manager. "I think he might start off next year in the Chester

Cup (handicap) in May, but we hope he could go on to perform in the top staying

races.

"He looks a very progressive

type, with a lot of improvement in him and although he drifted on his second

last start in the Mallard S., he was not too bad and not unlike a Montjeu.

They just need holding on for a little bit longer.

Hillen, who bought subsequent money-spinner and Ayr Gold Cup winner Redford (Bahri) for Koukash at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale last year, felt

his judgment regarding Mount Athos was vindicated on hearing that

Donald was the underbidder.

"That's good news as he's a very good judge," Hillen smiled.

Chris Waller's stable in Sydney, Australia, gained two six-figure additions

thanks to agent Guy Mulcaster. He paid 180,000gns for CONTRACT CATERER (Azamour

[Ire]) on whom McCain was again underbidder, and Waller also paid 100,000gns for

FORETELLER (Dansili [GB]).

"Contract Caterer could be one to go over 10 or 12 furlongs and we've got a

lot of races for those types of horses," Mulcaster said.

Contract Caterer was consigned by Park House Stables as Lot 1026, while

Foreteller entered the sales ring as Lot 1106 from the Juddmonte Farms

consignment.

The sale concludes Thursday. Complete results are available on
