Woodford Racing LLC’s Timeline grabbed command of Sunday’s $99,000 Pegasus Stakes (G3) out of the gate and never looked back en route to a 3 1/2-length victory under jockey Javier Castellano.
The duo set all the pace through splits of :23.70, :47.07, 1:10.64 and 1:35.13. Talk Logistics tried to challenge the 1-10 favorite in the lane, but was easily turned back as Timeline drew off to stop the clock in 1:41.32 for 1 1/16 miles over Monmouth Park’s fast main track.
That time just missed the 1:41.20 track record set by Formal Gold in 1997.
Talk Logistics proved best of the rest, 13 1/4 lengths up on third-placer Honor the Fleet. Only a nose separated that runner and Glory Stars while another 4 1/2 lengths behind Greek Prince completed the order under the wire.
Timeline paid $2.20 for the win, which improved his career record to a perfect four-for-four. After breaking his maiden in March at Gulfstream Park, the Chad Brown trainee captured an allowance/optional claimer one month later at Aqueduct by 13 lengths.
The chestnut son of Hard Spun made his stakes bow in the Peter Pan Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park last out on May 13 and easily scored by 3 1/2 lengths on that occasion. He’s now banked $243,000, and put himself in prime position for the $1 million Haskell Invitational (G1) on July 30 at Monmouth.
Bred in Kentucky by Alexander Groves Matz LLC, Timeline is the first registered foal out of the Empire Maker mare Azorina. The very well-bred sophomore’s fourth dam is blue-hen mare and Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee.
PEGASUS QUOTES
Javier Castellano, jockey Timeline, winner
“I used him a little out of the gate to just get him going. I loved the way he did it today because when I asked him early, he didn’t rush. He just galloped along on the lead. He handled the track so well. He’s a very nice horse.”
Chad Brown, trainer Timeline, winner
“He was brilliant again. There was a chance he would wind up on the lead. Ultimately, I just left it up to (jockey) Javier (Castellano). He rode a terrific race, as always.”
