What horses could run in the 2017 Breeders' Cup World Championships?

The release of Breeders’ Cup pre-entries on October 25 will allow horseplayers the better part of a week in advance of the post-position draw for all sorts of necessary activities, not the least of which are handicapping and early mapping of possible wagering strategies. Interestingly, the featured events on both days are expected to attract fields that will be among the smallest of the weekend.

The Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), the highlight of the Friday program, will likely draw a select group of 10 fillies and mares. With Stellar Wind and Forever Unbridled leading the older mares and Abel Tasman, Elate, and Paradise Woods leading the three-year-old brigade, the race figures to decide both the older female and three-year-old filly Eclipse Award winners.

The $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on Saturday has 11 probable pre-entries and features a long-awaited second showdown of the year between all-time leading money winner Arrogate and the streaking Gun Runner. Finishing in that order last March in the Dubai World Cup (G1), Arrogate has dropped two straight in the interim, while Gun Runner has run himself into probable Classic favoritism with blowout wins in the Stephen Foster H. (G1), Whitney (G1), and Woodward (G1).

While those two and Collected, who beat Arrogate in the Pacific Classic (G1), will vie for the older male title, West Coast likely need only turn in a respectable showing to solidify his status as the year’s leading three-year-old colt. Trainer Bob Baffert trains Arrogate, Collected, and West Coast, who will seek to give the Hall of Fame conditioner a fourth Classic win in a row.

Another select field of 10 is expected to pre-enter the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), a highlight of the Saturday card which should go a long way toward determining the division champion.

Baffert will attempt a title defense of this race as well with 2016 winner Drefong, who beat an even smaller group last year at Santa Anita. Among those looking to spring the minor upset are Roy H, El Deal, Mind Your Biscuits (third last year), and the three-year-old Takaful, recent hero of the Vosburgh (G1).
