War Emblem Wires Derby Field
Last year, The Thoroughbred Corp.'s Point Given was all but handed the roses before the Kentucky Derby (G1) had even been contested. Like all but one favorite since 1979, the outfit and their colt were forced to observe the presentation outside the winner's circle. Flash ahead 48 weeks, and the Thoroughbred Corp. still didn't have a Derby starter for this year. But that all changed soon after WAR EMBLEM (Our Emblem) captured last month's Illinois Derby (G2) over highly regarded Repent (Louis Quatorze). With that win, he attracted the attention of Prince Ahmed Salman (owner of The Thoroughbred Corp.) and trainer Bob Baffert. The prince acquired the colt privately, and the rest, they say, is history. He was rewarded with racing's grandest prize as the colt led from wire-to-wire, the first since 1988. These connections, albeit with two different riders, have now won the last three Triple Crown races. Ridden by Victor Espinoza, who was making only his second Derby appearance, War Emblem set a legitimate but not breathtaking pace, logging a quarter in :23 1/5 and a half in :47. As the field turned for home, Espinoza hadn't moved a muscle, and any astute observer could tell a lot was left in the tank. He easily kept Proud Citizen (Gone West) and Perfect Drift (Dynaformer) at bay and, in the end, pulled away with alarming ease, looking as if he could go around again. None of the other 15 ever mounted much of a threat at any point. The near black colt came in on Perfect Drift at the top of the stretch a bit, but jockey Eddie Delahoussaye, who rode the gelding, graciously opined afterward that the best horse won anyway. War Emblem, sent off at a square 20-1, returned $43, $22.80 and $13.60. Proud Citizen was worth $24.60 and $13.40 at 23-1, while Perfect Drift paid $6.40 at 7-1. The exacta returned $1,300.80, and the trifecta a large $18,373.20. Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado [Ire]) capped off the 5-13-3-9 superfecta, which paid a gargantuan $183,529. |
Following the top four across the wire were Request for Parole (Judge T C), Came Home (Gone West), Harlan's Holiday (Harlan), Johannesburg (Hennessy), Essence of Dubai (Pulpit), Saarland (Unbridled), Blue Burner (French Deputy), Castle Gandolfo (Gone West), Easy Grades (Honor Grades), Private Emblem (Our Emblem), Lusty Latin (El Prado [Ire]), It'sallinthechase (Take Me Out), Ocean Sound (Ire) (Mujadil) and Wild Horses (Saint Ballado). Buddha (Unbridled's Song) was withdrawn Friday and Danthebluegrassman (Pioneering) was scratched Saturday morning. War Emblem is the third foal out of the Lord at War (Arg) mare Sweetest Lady, who won five races from 16 tries. The broodmare also is the dam of stakes winner Pretty Gale (Mountain Cat) and has a two-year-old filly named My Sweet Heart (You and I). The colt was bred in Kentucky by Charles Nuckols Jr. & Sons. The Kentucky Derby and Illinois Derby are War Emblem's only stakes wins to date, but all horses must start somewhere. Frank Springer was previously his trainer, and this was the colt's first start for Baffert, who now owns three Derby scores, the first two coming with Silver Charm and Real Quiet. He barely missed the Triple Crown with both. With the win, War Emblem has five triumphs from eight starts. Sportsman's Park offered a $1 million bonus to any horse who won the Illinois Derby and a Triple Crown race. Consequently, War Emblem now possesses earnings of $2,241,000. |
Danthebluegrassman Withdrawn
Golden Gate Derby (G3) winner DANTHEBLUEGRASSMAN (Pioneering) was declared out of the Kentucky Derby (G1) on Saturday morning after tying up while cooling out from a jog.
"After a routine jog this morning, Danthebluegrassman, when he came back to the barn and after we bathed him, we noticed he was walking a little short in behind," trainer Bob Baffert said.
"We called over Dr. Doug Berry, and he looked at him and said he was tying up. It's like a muscle tightening. We had to treat him. If you don't get on it right away, it could injure him. He could tear a muscle in his back. We had to give him some muscle relaxers and you can't run a horse after you give them all that.
"He is going to be OK," Baffert added. "It's a shame for the connections. He's done this before, but not for a long time."
In Brief
S J B Stable's HOLIDAY RUNNER (Meadowlake) gained the early lead in Saturday's $121,400 Three Chimneys Juvenile S. at Churchill Downs and extended it to a length at the wire. Making her second career start, the D. Wayne Lukas trainee remained unbeaten beneath Jerry Bailey and is now perfect in two starts. One of only four fillies in the field (one was scratched), Holiday Runner has amassed $106,493 in earnings thus far. Zavata (Phone Trick) ran second, followed by Posse (Silver Deputy)...Anyone with a $2 ticket in the Oaks/Derby Double with the numbers 1-5 would have received $1,395.40 after Saturday's Run for the Roses...The attendance for the Kentucky Derby (G1) was 145,033, the fifth highest ever. It's record still stands at 163,628 for the 1974 running, the centennial edition.
On the New York Worktab
Grade 1 winner FORBIDDEN APPLE (Pleasant Colony), unraced this season, breezed a half-mile in :48 4/5 over the fast main track at Belmont Park on Saturday.
JULIE JALOUSE (Kris S.) winner of the Orchid H. (G2) last out, was seen going the same distance in the same time.
VICTORY RIDE (Seeking the Gold), winner of last summer's Test S. (G1), blazed a bullet five furlongs in :57 3/5.
Champion MACHO UNO (Holy Bull), working over the fast Belmont training surface, recorded one mile in 1:46, breezing.
At Aqueduct, the old warrior SAY FLORIDA SANDY (Personal Flag), a Grade 2 winner and millionaire, covered four furlongs in :49 3/5 over the fast track.
Multiple Grade 1 winner CRITICAL EYE (Dynaformer) worked five furlongs in 1:01 2/5.
On the Kentucky Worktab
Before the crowds arrived at Churchill Downs, Grade 2 winner DOLLAR BILL (Peaks and Valleys) worked three-quarters in 1:13 2/5 over the fast main strip. The four-year-old was third in the Oaklawn H. (G1) last time out.
INTERNATIONAL HEADLINES
Rock of Gibraltar Takes Guineas
Trainer Aidan O'Brien began Saturday with a bang when he sent out the 1-2 finishers in the Sagitta Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) at Newmarket. ROCK OF GIBRALTAR (Danehill), ridden by John Murtagh, edged out stablemate Hawk Wing (Woodman) by a hard-fought neck. Redback (Mark of Esteem [Ire]) was 1 1/4 lengths back in third. The winner completed the race in 1:36.50.
"I got plenty of cover and decided to kick early and he really accelerated," Murtagh said. "He was pulling up a little in front and I could see Jamie (Spencer, on Hawk Wing) was flying but I think we won a bit snugly in the end."
Completing the order were Zipping (Zafonic), Twilight Blues (Bluebird), Aramram (Danzig), Compton Dragon (Woodman), Massalani (Ashkalani), King of Happiness (Spinning World), Steenberg (Flying Spur), Where or When (Danehill Dancer), Ho Choi (Pivotal), Love Regardless (Storm Bird), Naheef (Marju), Coshocton (Silver Hawk), Parasol (Halling), Bragadino (Zilzal), Sholokhov (Sadler's Wells), Meshaheer (Nureyev), Tendulkar (Spinning World), Rapscallion (Robellino) and Sweet Band (Dixieland Band).

"I thought this race, it's hard, you know, you buy a horse a month out like that. But here, I've been so lucky. I know a lot of people feel, well, it's not the fair way to come into a Derby, but believe me, this is my livelihood. This is how I make a living. This is how I support my children and everybody else. I have a big staff that works for me and everything else. This was a big thing for me." Kentucky Derby (G1) winning trainer Bob Baffert on his luck in the best two minutes in sports; he's now won the race three times "You just get this incredible feeling when you see your horse just -- you know you're going to win, and that last 100 yards, you wish it would last forever. It was just incredible." Baffert "A lot of media have been knocking this field. There were some good horses in there. All of those horses were very good horses. It's a good year, but just a lot of parity. I think when Repent (Louis Quatorze) got beat by this horse, he beat him by a block, and Repent was like the number one horse. I just wish they would not dog a lot of these horses because they were really good. Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado [Ire]), Buddha (Unbridled's Song), it's a good crop. They are always a good crop. It's like saying the World Series winners, they are no good. You've got to be good to get here, and they are all good. It's that kind of race. We were just really good today." Baffert on the current group of sophomores "(Trainer Bobby Springer) was such a nice guy, that, you know I called him the following day...and I told him 'You know what? If we happen to get lucky and I win one of these races, there's a million-dollar bonus; I'm going to split it with you.' And he told me every little bad thing and he really helped me get to know this horse in a hurry and he played a big part." Baffert on War Emblem's previous trainer Bobby Springer "No, I'm not a gambler. Honestly I don't do that. I wish I could do that." Prince Ahmed Salman, owner of Derby winner WAR EMBLEM (Our Emblem), on whether or not he bet on the colt "You have to remember, sir, I'm a businessman, I'm not a politician. I leave this question to our politicians and your politicians." Salman commenting on the tensions between the United States and Arab nations; he is from Saudi Arabia |
"He ran really, really well. He ran a tremendous race. I told Wayne (Lukas) that the only difference between the two of us (Proud Citizen and War Emblem) was that my horse was getting over the ground good, he was getting over the ground well. I noticed that right away, so I tried to stay within striking distance of him. He just kicked on away from us. I thought at one point that my horse could quit, but he just reached down and cut again. Hopefully we can turn the tables in the next one (Preakness S. [G1])." —jockey Mike Smith on Derby runner-up PROUD CITIZEN (Gone West) "I couldn't be happier with the way this horse ran. Given the pace, he would have had to been a lot tighter to run down the winner and we're coming off just the one prep in the Lexington (S. [G2]). But he beat some nice horses and I think he'll beat some more down the line. You'll be hearing more from him." —trainer D. Wayne Lukas on Proud Citizen "They were walking. I thought there would be five or six horses in front of me, but nobody was going with the leader. I thought they'd go the half in :46, not :47. I was up front, but I didn't want to be. I was just being dragged along with the race. Go watch the tapes and you'll see that I was strangling the horse -- like we were going a mile and one half. But there was no pace. I just don't know where those other horses were. I thought there'd be some push up front, but no. What can you say. That's horse racing." —jockey Eddie Delahoussaye on third-place finisher PERFECT DRIFT (Dynaformer) "He didn't break that great and we got squeezed back. So instead of being close to the pace like I wanted, I found myself behind a lot of horses. I couldn't get him out of the jam in time. To me, he's still a top horse, but things happen in racing." —jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr. on MEDAGLIA D'ORO (El Prado [Ire]), fourth in the Derby "When I spoke to Laffit in the paddock, I didn't give him any instructions. I just told him to ride the horse with confidence. I told him that he could do anything with the horse. I wanted to give him confidence. The horse broke bad and he got stopped in the turn. He ran fourth." —trainer Bobby Frankel about Medaglia d'Oro "I had a great trip. Unbelievably no trouble. I saved ground all the way. The horse tried all the way. We just couldn't catch that horse in front. I thought I had a big chance at the half-mile pole, but the winner, he has improved a lot his last two races." —REQUEST FOR PAROLE's (Judge T C) jockey Robby Albarado; the pair finished fifth "War Emblem was up there, and he had to do all the running. He took a little heat from Proud Citizen and he was able to shake him off and kept on marching. I was a little wide around the first turn, but that was to be expected. We had the opportunity to draw inside the other day and I chose outside, and (trainer) Paco (Gonzalez) chose outside because I wanted to be outside the speed. We were not flying by any means, but it was a good, honest pace. If he had gotten away with a :48 or :49 pace, then we would have had a lot of hot trainers to deal with, for letting War Emblem go that slowly. He ran a legitimate pace. It was probably a little slower than I thought he might go. He was the best horse. He set all the fractions and didn't look back. A couple of races I won on (Came Home) this year, he kind of stalled on me going around the turn which makes it a little confusing to me to understand how much horse I have left. At the three-eighths pole today, he responded in kind but straightening out for home, he wasn't really able to sustain his run." —jockey Chris McCarron on sixth-place finisher CAME HOME (Gone West) "He broke OK, but he didn't pull like he usually does. When we hit the backstretch, he didn't give me any confidence. He wasn't responding like he has been. Then I had to put him in a drive a lot sooner than I wanted to. He really didn't respond." —jockey Edgar Prado on seventh-place runner HARLAN'S HOLIDAY (Harlan) "No major excuses; I'm not surprised with how the race unfolded. I was concerned about the speed of the race coming in, with no speed horse. It's never easy. It's a tough race to win. It was a great job by our horse, we'll be back." —trainer Kenny McPeek on Harlan's Holiday "A half-mile out of the gate I was urging him to keep his position. And when you've got to do that at that point in the Kentucky Derby, you know you don't have much chance. It didn't seem like the fractions were too fast, but I was too far back to make an impact. This was a big task for him. They asked an awful lot for him to come all this way and to try and pull this off. But he wasn't disgraced." —jockey Gary Stevens on JOHANNESBURG (Hennessy), who ran eighth "Very disappointing. I couldn't see the race properly from where I was and I'll need to look at the tape, be we were never in it." —Pat Keating, assistant trainer to Aiden O'Brien, on Johannesburg and 12th-place runner CASTLE GANDOLFO (Gone West) "There was no pace. I was waiting for someone to challenge War Emblem but when nobody did, I knew I was in trouble. My horse just didn't run at all." —jockey David Flores on ESSENCE OF DUBAI (Pulpit), who ran ninth "He made a move coming into the home turn, but we could have done with the sort of pace that was in the race last year. The others didn't come back to him" —assistant trainer Tom Albertrani on Essence of Dubai "He really didn't want to run today. He was steady the entire way and had no push whatsoever." —jockey John Velazquez on SAARLAND (Unbridled) who finished 10th "I finished way back. He was aggressive going under the wire the first time and more forwardly placed than we would have liked. We were not able to tuck in like we had anticipated. We really thought we would be near the rear of the field and be able to angle in and save some ground. At the half-mile pole, everybody started to pick it up, and he did not respond." —jockey Pat Day on 11th-place finisher BLUE BURNER (French Deputy) "There's not much to say. Our concern was not to be too far back. We were in good shape but he couldn't quicken like the others." —jockey Jerry Bailey on Castle Gandolfo |

Beat Hollow Captures Turf Classic
Juddmonte Farms' homebred BEAT HOLLOW (GB) (Sadler's Wells), a Group 1 winner in France, earned his first Grade 1 victory Saturday in the $452,500 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1), the race before the Run for the Roses, at Churchill Downs. Ridden by Alex Solis, who in the last race he rode prior to the Turf Classic took a serious tumble, and trained by Bobby Frankel, Beat Hollow completed the 1 1/8-mile firm turf test in a time of 1:47 1/5.
Clear by 1 1/4 lengths, Beat Hollow rewarded his many backers with $5.20, $3.40 and $2.60 as the 8-5 favorite. With Anticipation (Relaunch), a fast closing second as the 5-1 third choice, finished three-quarters of a length ahead of Hap (Theatrical [Ire]) to pay $5.20 and $3.40. The latter, the 4-1 second choice, was good for $3.20. The exacta was worth $30 while the 3-9-4 trifecta brought $97.
White Heart (GB) (Green Desert), Pisces (Prized), Baptize (Dynaformer), Quiet Resolve (Affirmed), Climate (Cahill Road), Talkmeister (Fly So Free) and Sligo Bay (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) completed the order of finish.
Beat Hollow, who shadowed the pacesetter early, went four wide down the backstretch, took over at the top of the stretch and prevailed under hand urging.
Beat Hollow, who ran third in the 2000 English Derby (Eng-G1), closed out his European career with a victory in that same year's Grand Prix de Paris (Fr-G1). He made his American debut this January when he captured an optional claiming event before finishing a very close second in the Explosive Bid H. (G2). He now owns a 7-5-1-1 career mark and has earned $839,521.
Bred in Great Britain, Beat Hollow was produced from Irish Oaks (Ire-G1) winner Wemyss Bight (GB) (Dancing Brave), who is also the dam of Grade 3 winner Yaralino (GB) (Caerleon). Last year, the 12-year-old mare produced a full brother to Saturday's winner.

Celtic Melody takes Humana Distaff Via DQ
Vinery Stables' CELTIC MELODY (Mr. Greeley) was contending for top honors in Saturday's $228,000 Humana Distaff H. (G1) at Churchill Downs when she was bumped by front-running Gold Mover (Gold Fever) leaving the eighth pole. Jockey Mark Guidry had to suddenly put the brakes on Celtic Melody, who later re-rallied toward her rival and just missed by a head.
Guidry lodged a claim of foul against Gold Mover and jockey John Velazquez, and the stewards disqualified the latter to second. It was the second disqualification on the card in a graded event.
Celtic Melody, sent away at 7-1, was good for payouts of $16.60, $7.20 and $5.20. Gold Mover paid $4.60 and $3.60 as the slight 5-2 favorite, and finishing another length back was Hattiesburg (Mutakddim), who returned $6.80 at 15-1. The exacta was worth $55.80 and the 12-9-4 trifecta $940.20. Completing the order of finish were Netherland (Arg) (Roy), Nasty Storm (Gulch), Spanish Glitter (Glitterman), Sweet Nanette (You and I), Trip (Lord at War [Arg]) and Away (Dixieland Band). City Fair (Carson City), Gal on the Go (Irgun), Penny Marie (Sky Classic) and Red n'Gold (Tabasco Cat) were scratched.
Gold Mover seized the lead from Celtic Melody and Spanish Glitter in the stretch and was all out to hold off the oncoming Celtic Melody in the end. She crossed the line for the seven-furlong fast track test in 1:22 4/5.
"Sure, it's a tough way to win a Grade 1, but she deserved it," said James Jerkens, Celtic Melody's trainer. "He (Velazquez) was crowding her and she was getting jostled pretty good. You see riders do that. When they're trying to surge past a horse and they can't quite shake them, they'll come over and intimidate them. There are ways you can legally do that, but today it went too far. I thought he cost us the race."
Celtic Melody rocketed her earnings to $329,000 and record to 13-4-4-1 with the score. This was her first stakes victory, though she had placed in four prior to Saturday, including the Cotillion H. (G2).
Bred in Kentucky by Kip Elser & Betz Farm Inc., Celtic Melody is the most successful produce of Ballynaugh (Desert Wine), who also has an unnamed yearling full brother to the Humana winner.

D'Wildcat Elevated to First
Fog City Stable's D'WILDCAT (Forest Wildcat) was outrun to the line in Saturday's $171,450 Churchill Downs H. (G2) by the favored Snow Ridge (Tabasco Cat) but was elevated to first after the latter was disqualified. Jockey Mike Smith and Snow Ridge had the lead in the stretch but the rider struck D'Wildcat across the face near the wire, according to the stewards, who took down the D. Wayne Lukas trainee.
D'Wildcat, conditioned by Bob Hess Jr. and ridden by Kent Desormeaux, was worth $19.80, $8.80 and $6 at nearly 9-1. Snow Ridge, the 5-2 favorite, returned $5 and $3.80. It was another head back to Binthebest (Binalong), who was good for $6.60 at 18-1. The exacta paid $93.60 while the 7-4-2 trifecta brought $1,513.20.
Completing the order were Twilight Road (Cahill Road), Ceeband (Chimes Band), Crafty Shaw (Crafty Prospector), Storm Craft (Forest Wildcat), Accelerant (Candy Stripes) and Dream Run (Cherokee Run).
The race was marred by the tragic breakdown of Kings Command (Montbrook). He took a bad step on the backstretch and unseated jockey Alex Solis in the process. The rider was uninjured, but the horse suffered traumatic injuries and was euthanized.
Needless to say, Smith didn't agree with the stewards' decision.
"It was right at the wire," Smith said afterward. "I never changed my style and I didn't think that I even hit him. I was still leading by a neck. If anything, he ran into it. I stayed the same. Just because he's coming doesn't mean I have to stop riding."
Bred in Kentucky by New Farm, D'Wildcat was sold for $600,000 as an OBS March two-year-old. He is out of the D'Accord mare D'Enough, who was stakes-placed and earned more than $117,000. The 11-year-old mare has an unnamed yearling filly by Exploit.
D'Wildcat, winner of last year's Swale S. (G3), now has a bankroll of $266,299 and a record of 7-3-1-1.

Fast Decision Wins the Withers
Peter Karches' FAST DECISION (Gulch) improved his record to three wins from four starts with a three-quarters-of-a-length victory in Saturday's $150,000 Withers S. (G3) at Aqueduct. The Christophe Clement trainee settled behind the pacesetting Shah Jehan (Mr. Prospector) throughout before digging in under jockey Jose Santos and prevailing in a time of 1:36 2/5 for a mile on the fast dirt.
"I can't believe I am winning a dirt stake for Christophe Clement," Santos said after the race. This was the third Withers win for Clement, having taken the 1995 and 1997 editions.
Fast Decision was sent off the 9-2 fourth choice in the five-horse field, paying $11.40, $4.90 and $3.70 while Shah Jehan gave back $3.50 and $2.70 as the 9-5 second pick. Listen Here (Gulch) paid $3.40 for coming in third another 4 1/2 lengths back. Favored Monthir (Gulch) and Lord ofthe Thunder (Saint Ballado) followed the top three under the wire.
With his first graded victory, Fast Decision has now earned $131,900. Bred in Kentucky by Edward P. Evans, the sophomore colt was sold for $210,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling. He is out of the unraced Demi Souer (Storm Bird), who is a half-sister to sire Dehere, and has a half-brother in a yearling by Gold Fever.

Distaff Winner is Stylish on Green
The Thoroughbred Corp.'s STYLISH (Thunder Gulch) recorded her first stakes win Saturday in the $115,200 Distaff Turf Mile (G3) with a determined late run. Under the guidance of jockey Jerry Bailey in an always dangerous pairing with trainer Bill Mott, Stylish completed the test in a time of 1:35 3/5 over the firm weeds.
As the 7-2 third choice, Stylish returned $9, $4.60 and $3 while keying the $80 exacta. La Recherche (Sky Classic), at 7-1 odds, finished 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner and paid $7.40 and $4.40. Another head back in third was Dianehill (Ire) (Danehill), part of the favored entry at 5-2, who was good for $2.80. The 4-9-1 trifecta was worth $240.40.
Freefourracing (French Deputy), Sitka (Dynaformer), Ever With You (With Approval), Zeta (You and I), No Deadline (Skywalker), Salty Farma (Salt Lake) and Grey Ballet (Imperial Ballet [Ire]) followed the top three across the wire.
"She usually lays 1-2, but there was a lot of speed in there and they all left the gate like they wanted the lead," Bailey said. "I had her laying fourth or fifth, and when I asked her to run, she came and got them."
Stylish has now bankrolled $212,320 from a 13-4-5-2 career line.
Bred in Kentucky by the late Allen Paulson, Stylish was produced from Grade 3 winner Miss Lenora (Theatrical [Ire]). A $725,000, 1999 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, Stylish is a half-sister to multiple Grade 2-placed Tangazi (Jade Hunter) and also has a younger winning half-sister named Party Queen (Cozzene). Late last month, Miss Lenora dropped a colt by A.P. Indy.

Winning Adoration for a Senorita
Amerman Racing Stables' ADORATION (Honor Grades) grabbed the lead in Saturday's $107,300 Senorita S. (G3) at Hollywood Park and never looked back, winning the firm turf feature by three-quarters of a length. Trained by David Hofmans and ridden by Garrett Gomez, the three-year-old filly set fractions of :24, :47 4/5 and 1:11 1/5 before completing a mile in 1:34 4/5.
"She's a little fighter," Gomez said after taking his second straight Senorita. The jockey won last year's edition with Fantastic Filly (Fr) (Myrakalu [Fr]).
Adoration, at 6-1, gave $14.60, $4 and $3 back to her supporters while keying the $14.50 ($1) exacta. High Society (Ire) (Key of Luck) was worth $2.60 and $2.20 as the 3-5 favorite while Nunatall (GB) (Night Shift) finished out the top three, paying $3.20. The 2-1-3, $1 trifecta returned $47.30. Red Little Lies (Red Ransom), Daisyago (Affirmed) and Forty On Line (GB) (Pharly) completed the order of finish after Boozin' Susan (French Deputy) was scratched.
With a record that now reads 5-2-1-0, Adoration has earned $104,700. She is the seventh foal, and first stakes winner, for the unraced Key to the Mint mare Sewing Lady. Sold for $40,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the bay sophomore was bred in Kentucky by Lucy Bassett.
