Heat shows a Lethal kick in Santa Paula

Trainer Barry Abrams and co-breeder Madeline Auerbach's LETHAL HEAT (Unusual Heat) brought a perfect mark into her main-track debut in Sunday's $108,500 Santa Paula S. (G3) at Santa Anita, and the sophomore filly passed with flying colors in posting a 1 3/4-length win under Gerry Olguin. A winner in her two lifetime starts, with both coming in this month, the bay miss rated kindly in the early stages prior to asserting herself at the head of the stretch, overtaking early leader Peisinoe (Yes It's True) and streaking home to complete the 6 1/2 furlongs on the Cushion Track in 1:14 4/5. The 7-1 fifth choice paid $16, $6 and $4, while spearheading the $1 gimmicks that returned $53.70 (exacta), $464 (trifecta) and $2,082.90 (2-5-8-6 superfecta).

P. S. U. Grad (Harlan's Holiday) was near the back of the pack for the opening half-mile, but found her best stride in the lane to record the runner-up performance. The 6-1 shot paid $6.40 and $4.80 for the place while a half-length clear of the late-running longshot Highland Torree (Menifee), who was good for $6.80 at 28-1. Peisinoe capped the super at nearly 6-1 and was followed by Lovely Isle (Double Honor), Dawn Before Dawn (High Yield) and Sweet August Moon (Malibu Moon). Crown of Diamonds (Distorted Humor) was withdrawn.

Lethal Heat closed with a rush to take her debut and followed that up with a fast-finishing win in her second try, both going about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf. The California-bred now boasts $146,220 in earnings.

The winner was bred by Auerbach, David Abrams & Tom Roberts, and is out of the multiple stakes-winning Lethal Leta (Synastry). Lethal Heat was preceded in stakes glory by 2004 Meafara S. queen Prevalent (Carson City), and she also has an unraced two-year-old full sister named Heatology.
