Rebellion streaks to glory in the Commonwealth

Rebellion has now captured stakes on turf and Polytrack (Photo by Z/Keeneland)
James and Marylea Treptow's REBELLION (GB) (Mozart [Ire]) powered home on the outside to collar game pacesetter Elite Squadron (Officer) in the final yards to annex the $390,000 Commonwealth S. (G2) over the Polytrack at Keeneland on Saturday. The Graham Motion trainee broke well and was never out of touch beneath Edgar Prado, being kept in the clear while rating behind early splits of :23 and :46 1/5 for the opening half-mile. Turning for home, Prado began to ask his mount for more and Rebellion answered, picking up steam and edging Elite Squadron by a head, reaching the wire in a swift 1:21 2/5 for seven-eighths. Sent off as the 4-1 second choice, the winner paid $10.20, $5.40 and $4.60 while keying the $368.40 exacta, $4,371 trifecta and $22,187.20 superfecta (6-5-7-8).

Elite Squadron held a one-length advantage at every call except the last one in a solid runner-up effort as the 38-1 longshot. The second-placer was worth $31.80 and $14. Medzendeekron (Unusual Heat) was last after the opening quarter-mile but closed with good energy to gain the show spot at nearly 13-1, worth $8.20. Forefathers (Gone West) was another three-parts back and capped the super at 6-1. Lukewarm favorite Thousand Words (GB) (Dansili [GB]) was next and followed by Buffalo Man (El Prado [Ire]), Storm Military (Arg) (Bernstein), Doppio (Gentlemen [Arg]), Papa Bear (Distorted Humor) and Xchanger (Exchange Rate).

Rebellion was second over this oval last year in the Phoenix S. (G3) and added his second stakes win here, with the initial one coming in the grassy Steinlen S. at Belmont last summer. The five-year-old was last seen a troubled eighth in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1). From a 15-6-2-4 career mark, the bay has banked $400,366.

The winner was bred in Great Britain by Darley and purchased for $57,745 at the 2006 Tattersalls July sale. He is the first foal out of Group 2 queen Last Resort (Lahib) and has an unraced two-year-old half-brother by Halling named Hallstatt. This is the same female family as multiple Irish and French highweight College Chapel (Sharpo) and multiple New Zealand champion King's Chapel (King of Kings).
