Foxysox holds on in Santa Barbara Warren Williamson's FOXYSOX (GB) (Foxhound) took the lead in midstretch and held off Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) and longshot I Can See (Flying Chevron) by two noses at the wire to annex the $200,000 Santa Barbara H. (G2) over the Santa Anita lawn on Saturday. The Carla Gaines trainee broke alertly while Forest Melody (Forest Camp) led the field through splits of :24 1/5, :47 3/5, 1:12 and 1:36 for the opening mile. Foxysox went three deep into the lane and slowly put away Forest Melody and 2-1 favorite Double Trouble (Brz) (Wild Event), but had two new shooters to deal with in Black Mamba and I Can See late. The winner held off the two closers to complete the 1 1/4 miles on the firm green in 2:00 2/5 as the 9-2 fourth choice, paying $11.40, $5.60 and $4.60 in the process. Black Mamba was the unluckiest horse in the field and might have come out on top with a smoother course. The 9-2 third choice saved ground early, was blocked entering the lane and had to be shifted out late for clear run, eventually missing by a nose. The runner-up returned $5.60 and $4.60 while finishing the $30.40 exacta ($1). I Can See was last for the initial eight panels but closed with a big rush while widest of all, and just missed the place by a nose. The 41-1 longest shot was worth $10.80 and enhanced the $665.70 trifecta ($1). Forest Melody endured for fourth another length back, capping the $2,851.20 superfecta (5-3-11-4) at 6-1 and was followed by Double Trouble, Solva (GB) (Singspiel [GB]), Persian Express (Bahri) and Lavender Sky (Mt. Livermore). Colina Verde (Brz) (Know Heights [Ire]), Immortelle (Brz) (Vettori) and Lemonette (Lemon Drop Kid) were withdrawn. Foxysox picked up her fourth graded stakes win and boosted her bankroll to $596,718 from a 20-6-2-4 career line. The five-year-old, who was bred in Great Britian by B. J. & Mrs. Crangle, won a quartet of stakes races in 2006, led by the Bayakoa H. (G2), Senorita S. (G3) and Providencia S. (G3), and also finished second in that year's Del Mar Oaks (G1). The winner is out of Triple Tricks (Royal Academy).
