Diamond Diva sparkles in Wilshire

Three Chimneys Farm's DIAMOND DIVA (GB) (Dansili [GB]) remained unbeaten in the United States with a good-looking victory from just off the pace in Wednesday's $110,800 Wilshire H. (G3) at Hollywood Park. Winner of the American Beauty H. at Santa Anita in her first start stateside, the James Cassidy-trained four-year-old filly notched her first graded win in the opening-day turf feature.

Sent off the slight 3-1 favorite among nine rivals, Diamond Diva chased the pace while wide entering the first turn, eventually settling into a good stalking position about a couple of lengths back. La Tee (Broken Vow), an 18-1 longshot, led by a narrow margin through splits in :23, :45 3/5 and 1:08 4/5, and she threatened to steal it all upon reaching the top of the stretch, extending her advantage to 1 1/2 lengths while passing the seven-furlong mark in 1:21. However, Diamond Diva rallied wide into the stretch and mowed the front runner down, stopping the teletimer over the firm course in 1:33 1/5.

She paid $8.20, $5 and $3.80, and Kris' Sis (Forestry), who also rallied to catch La Tee in deep stretch while no serious threat to the winner, finished three-quarters of a length back in second at 7-2. Place returned $4.20 and $2.80, and La Tee was good for $8.20 after easily holding third. The $1 exotics yielded $18.30 (exacta), $260.60 (trifecta) and $1,142.70 (10-4-5-3 superfecta). Colina Verde (Brz) (Know Heights [Ire]) rounded out the super at 6-1 and was followed under the wire by Unspoken Word (Catienus), Honored Gold (Double Honor), Shermeen (Ire) (Desert Style), Gentle Gale (Storm Cat) and Star of Whitney (Bernstein). Macadamia (Artax) was withdrawn.

Bred in England by Glebe Stud and Mrs. F. Woods, Diamond Diva sold for $496,813 at the 2007 Tattersalls December sale. She finished second in three listed stakes abroad, and is now two-for-two in the United States, improving her overall record to 14-5-4-2, $247,48599. The dark bay lass is out of the winning Vivianna (Indian Ridge), who is out of the South African champion three-year-old filly Kundalini (El Gran Senor).
