Lucky Island records sharp score in Bold Ruler

Shadwell Stable's LUCKY ISLAND (Arg) (Lucky Roberto) swung off the rail at the top of the stretch, collared pacesetter Man of Danger (Tiger Ridge) in midstretch and drew off in the final furlong for a convincing 2 1/4-length victory in Saturday's $109,100 Bold Ruler H. (G3) at Belmont Park. Making his stakes debut for Kiaran McLaughlin, the four-year-old colt registered his third straight win when completing six furlongs on the fast track in 1:09 with jockey Alan Garcia.

Sent off the 7-2 third choice, Lucky Island paid $9.20, $6 and $4.60 while keying the $71.50 exacta with the 7-1 Man of Danger, who led the way through splits of :21 4/5, :45 and :56 3/5. Place returned $8.20 and $5.50, and it was two lengths back to third-placer Forefathers (Gone West), who offered a mild rally from off the pace at 3-1 and paid $4 while capping the $287 trifecta (3-1-4). Council Member (Seattle Slew) came next under the wire and was followed by Callmetony (Runaway Groom), 2-1 favorite Executive Fleet (Northern Afleet) and Gold and Roses (Gold Token).

Bred in Argentina by Arroyo de Luna, Lucky Island won his career debut by nine lengths at San Isidro last June before being transferred to McLaughlin.

"He's a very nice horse," the conditioner said. "The first time we ran him (a seventh-place finish at Calder in late December), he bled. We were thinking of sending him to Dubai, which is why he ran without Lasix. Now, he is three-for-three for us on Lasix. By the fall, we could stretch him out. We'll keep him sprinting for now."

Out of the unraced Equalize mare Ebrolize, Lucky Island captured an allowance at Gulfstream Park in mid-February and entered the Bold Ruler off a 4 1/2-length victory over allowance/optional claiming rivals at Aqueduct on April 5. The dark bay has earned $134,942 from his 5-4-0-0 line.
