Starforaday shines in Maryland Sprint

Starforaday outgamed his rivals in the Maryland Sprint (Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club)

Winning Move Stable's STARFORADAY (Five Star Day) picked a very good day to live up to his name. Kicking off the graded stakes action on Preakness Day at Pimlico, the Gary Contessa charge finished with a flourish to capture Saturday's $100,000 Maryland Sprint H. (G3).

"That's another walking advertisement for (glue-on) shoes," Contessa said. "The same shoes Big Brown (Boundary) uses. He has terrible feet. The shoes have saved his career. The finish he has is amazing."

Starforaday brought up the rear of the five-horse field as Celtic Innis (Yarrow Brae) and Cognac Kisses (Dixie Union) duked it out through an opening quarter-mile in :23. Cognac Kisses quickly disposed of his pace nemesis and opened up by daylight, reeling off splits of :45 4/5 and :57 2/5, while Starforaday continued to bide his time beneath a patient Edgar Prado. Inside the final furlong, however, Cognac Kisses began to stall. The stalking Suave Jazz (Suave Prospect) began to gain ground, and Starforaday lengthened stride purposefully even farther outside.

As the triumvirate approached the wire, Starforaday's momentum proved too strong, and he thrust his neck in front in a final time of 1:09 2/5 for six furlongs on the fast track. Suave Jazz was himself a neck ahead of Cognac Kisses, who had 1 1/2 lengths to spare over Celtic Innis. It was another 9 3/4 lengths back to the trailer The Vin Man (Louis Quatorze). Forest Park (Forest Wildcat) and Unbridled Behavior (Unbridled's Song) were withdrawn.

Leaving the gate as the 3-1 third choice, Starforaday paid $8.20, $3.60 and $2.40 while keying the $23 exacta, $36 trifecta and $77.80 superfecta (4-3-7-1). The 9-5 Suave Jazz returned $3.20 and $2.10, and Cognac Kisses yielded $2.10 as the 6-5 favorite.

Starforaday was recording his second career stakes victory, and his first since taking the O.B.S. Sprint S. as a sophomore in 2006. The bay has now bankrolled $184,519 from a record of 14-4-2-1.

Bred by Schelford Farm in Kentucky, Starforaday is out of Known Feminist (Known Fact), who was runner-up in the 1992 Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2) at Pimlico. He has an unnamed juvenile half-sister by Maria's Mon and a yearling half-brother by Tapit. This is the family of Grade 2 winner Meadow Flight (Meadowlake) and Grade 3 victress People's Princess (Meadowlake), who is herself the dam of this year's Cicada S. (G3) queen Carolyn's Cat (Forestry).
