Indyanne romps in Azalea

The Azaleas were in bloom for Indyanne (Jim Lisa Photos)

David and Jill Heerensperger's INDYANNE (Indian Charlie) passed her first test outside of California with flying colors in posting an impressive 9 1/2-length romp in the $250,000 Azalea S. (G3) at Calder on Saturday. Trained by Greg Gilchrist and piloted by Russell Baze, the unbeaten speedster broke well and dueled on the lead while wide early, asserted herself approaching the final turn and drew away when asked, reaching the wire in 1:10 4/5 for six furlongs. The 3-5 favorite paid $3.20, $2.40 and $2.10 while spearheading the $24.60 exacta, $88.20 trifecta and $254.80 superfecta.

"This was the logical spot for her to step up and I think she needed it," Gilchrist said. "Now, if all goes well, we'll look at the Test (S. [G1] at Saratoga on August 2), and she'll have to take another step up there."

Dubai Majesty (Essence of Dubai) stayed off the pace early and rallied to secure the black-type placing, finishing 1 1/4 lengths clear of her nearest pursuer. The runner-up, who was sent off at 12-1, paid $8 and $4.40. Dancing Allstar (Millennium Allstar) saved ground along the rail while in midpack and rallied mildly to gain third at nearly 6-1, paying $2.80 in the process. Grand Obsession (Shore Breeze) completed the superfecta at 5-1 and was followed by Dite Moi (Forest Wildcat), Orinoquia (Whywhywhy) and Freedom Alert (Northern Afleet).

Indyanne defeated maiden foes by 10 lengths at Bay Meadows in August of his juvenile year, and followed with a six-length dusting in the Bay Meadows Debutante. In her sophomore debut, the Kentucky-bred successfully handled a synthetic oval for the first time, rolling home by seven lengths in an allowance tune-up for this engagement. The miss boasts $226,850 in earnings from her four-race career.

The winner was bred by Offshoot Farm and was most recently purchased for $375,000 at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton February sale as a two-year-old. She is the second winner out of Merchant (Silver Ghost) and has an unraced two-year-old half-brother named Recruit (Stormy Atlantic), as well as an unnamed yearling half-brother by Cactus Ridge.
