Trickski hangs on in Rancho Bernardo

Tom Mankiewicz's DEAREST TRICKSKI (Proudest Romeo) was unchallenged early and had just enough late to hold off a spirited rally from Tiz Elemental (Cee's Tizzy) in late stretch to annex the $200,000 Rancho Bernardo H. (G3) by a nose at Del Mar on Sunday. Conditioned by John Sadler, the bay four-year-old established splits of :22 2/5 and :44 3/5 while one length clear, opened up daylight turning for home and held on gamely to the wire to earn the decision, finalizing the 6 1/2 furlongs in a brisk 1:15, establishing a new course mark on the Polytrack in the process. Sent off as the 2-1 second choice, the Florida-bred miss paid $6.20, $4.20 and $3.40 while keying the $1 gimmicks: $27.70 exacta, $285.90 trifecta and $1,464.90 superfecta (7-5-4-1).

"She was game all the way -- dead game," winning rider Mike Smith said. "At the end, she reached down to the bottom of her hooves and gave me all she had."

Tiz Elemental, the nearly 12-1 fifth choice, dipped four wide leaving the final turn and closed with excellent energy to just miss on the wire. The runner-up was good for $10.40 and $6.40. La Tee (Broken Vow) tracked the early pace and stayed on well to garner third honors 1 1/2 lengths back at 25-1. Show returned $11.60. Silky Smooth (Mr. Greeley) capped the super as the 6-1 third choice and was trailed by 3-2 favorite Magnificience (Stormy Atlantic), Society Hostess (Seeking the Gold), Spring Awakening (In Excess [Ire]), Highland Toree (Menifee) and Makor's Love (Makors Mark), who was eased in the stretch. Lethal Heat (Unusual Heat) was withdrawn.

Dearest Trickski has now reeled off wins in 10 of her last 12 starts, highlighted by a conquer in the La Brea S. (G1) in late December, and now owns a 16-11-2-0 line and a $660,108 bankroll. She also owns scores in the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Sprint and the A Gleam H. (G2) last time out. Produced from the stakes-placed Trickski (Peteski), the winner has a two-year-old half-sister named Trixianna (Snow Ridge) and an unnamed yearling half-brother by Freefourinternet. She was bred by Drs. K. K. and V. Devi Jayaraman.

By virtue of her victory in the Rancho Bernardo, Dearest Trickski has earned an automatic berth in the October 24 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

"She has to be supplemented to the Breeders' Cup," Sadler said, "but she's made enough money for Mr. Mankiewicz that I'm sure he'll be glad to do that."
