Bullet proves Fatal for Kentucky Cup Sprint rivals

Bear Stables' FATAL BULLET (Red Bullet) sprinted to the lead after the gates opened and ran his rivals into the ground, registering a powerful 7 3/4-length victory in Saturday's $100,000 Kentucky Cup Sprint (G3). Favored at 6-5 over eight rivals, the Reade Baker-trained sophomore gelding established a new track record when finishing off six furlongs in 1:08 over the Polytrack at Turfway Park under Eurico Da Silva. The Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) is next for the Florida-bred.

The winner paid $4.40, $3 and $3 while keying the $49.20 exacta with Silver Sword (Smart Strike), who advanced to second on the far turn and held his position to the wire at 14-1 to return $8 and $5.20. The late-running No Advantage (Posse) finished a half-length back in third at 34-1 and gave back $11.80. Hatta Fort (GB) (Cape Cross [Ire]), the 5-2 second choice, finished another neck back in fourth. The trifecta totaled $728.20, and the 5-9-10-4 superfecta was good for $5,024.20. Salute the Sarge (Forest Wildcat), Nautical Storm (Storm Cat), Beyond Ready (More Than Ready), Gentleman James (Yankee Gentleman) and That's Grand (Grand Slam) rounded out the order of finish. Eaton's Gift (Johannesburg) was scratched.

Bred by Adena Springs, Fatal Bullet is out of the multiple stakes-placed Sararegal (Regal Classic) and has an unnamed yearling half-sister by Milwaukee Brew and a 2008 half-sister named Wicked Speed (Macho Uno). This is the female family of stakes winners Table the Rumor (Round Table), Quick Lap (Nicholas) and Bayou Hebert (Hoist the Flag). Fatal Bullet opened his 2008 campaign with a victory over $62,500 claiming rivals and has now won six of seven starts this season, including the Bold Venture S. two starts previously at Woodbine and the Tom Ridge Labor Day S. in his previous outing at Presque Isle Downs. Purchased for $27,000 at the 2007 Adena March sale, the bay has now earned $367,996 from his 10-7-1-0 line.
