Kodiak Kowboy rounds up Sport Page Third in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) as Canada's champion two-year-old, Fox Hill Farm and Vinery Stable's KODIAK KOWBOY (Posse) didn't quite measure up as Breeders' Cup material this season. The bay colt took home a decent consolation prize on Saturday, however, winning the $150,000 Sport Page H. (G3) at Belmont Park by 1 3/4 lengths. The 9-5 favorite, Kodiak Kowboy completed seven furlongs in 1:24 4/5 over a fast track under Gabriel Saez. In the early going, Kodiak Kowboy was reserved just off the raging pace battle. Merchant Marine (Tiznow) held a head advantage through an opening quarter in :22 4/5, but Shopton Lane (Quiet American) put his head in front of fellow duelist Roi Maudit (Elusive Quality) through a half in :46 2/5, with Aquino (Uru) (First American) also part of the scrum. Kodiak Kowboy launched his bid in the stretch, mastered a stubborn Roi Maudit while getting six furlongs in 1:11 1/5, and staved off the late-rallying Eternal Star (Five Star Day) to pay $5.70, $3.40 and $3.10. The 7-1 Eternal Star gave back $7 and $5.10 for finishing 3 1/2 lengths clear of Roi Maudit, who returned $10.80 to show at 28-1. Merchant Marine, the nearly 5-2 second choice, crossed the wire in fourth. Trained by Larry Jones, Kodiak Kowboy previously won the Amsterdam S. (G2) this season and was most recently third in the Vosburgh S. (G1). With this score, Kodiak Kowboy's line improved to 14-7-2-2 with earnings of $821,558. Bred by Hartwell Farm in Kentucky, Kodiak Kowboy is the second foal from the unraced Coronado's Quest mare Kokadrie, who is a half-sister to Grade 1-winning millionaire West by West (Gone West). Kokadrie also has a weanling colt by Lion Heart.
