Khancord Kid records first stakes win in Herecomesthebride

Mary and Chester Broman's homebred KHANCORD KID (Lemon Drop Kid) established herself as an exciting prospect in the three-year-old filly turf ranks in Saturday's $150,000 Herecomesthebride S. (G3), winning her graded debut by a half-length. Jockey Rajiv Maragh guided her straight to the early lead over the firm course at Gulfstream Park, racing alongside Dynazaper (Ghostzapper) through comfortable early splits of :23 4/5, :48 2/5 and 1:12, and the John Kimmel-trained chestnut kicked clear from her rivals at the top of the stretch, passing the mile mark in 1:35 1/5 with a 1 1/2-length advantage. She went on to finish the 1 1/8-mile affair in 1:47.

Off as the 8-1 sixth choice in the nine-horse field, Khancord Kid was worth $18.20, $8 and $5.20. Apple Charlotte (Smart Strike) came flying late on the far outside to grab second at 6-1 and paid $7.40 and $4.40. It was a half-length back to slight 3-1 favorite Upperline (Maria's Mon), who stalked the front runners in third most of the way before coming up a little short and returned $3.20. The exacta totaled $156.80, the trifecta was $666.20, and the 8-7-6-3 superfecta, with the 4-1 Check the Label (Stormin Fever) another head back in fourth, yielded $3,034.40.

Dynazaper and Musical Romance (Concorde's Tune) dead-heated for fifth, and In the Rough (Stormy Atlantic), Splendid Sound (Trippi) and Profiteroles (Afleet Alex) came next under the wire. Main track only entrant Tesoro de Amor (Medaglia d'Oro) was scratched.

Khancord Kid improved to three-for-three under firm conditions. She dropped her first career start on the main track and broke her maiden when making her grass bow next time out at Belmont Park. After concluding her juvenile campaign with a fourth in the Good Mood S. over a soft turf, she opened her 2010 season with rallying allowance score at Gulfstream on January 14. In her previous outing, the sophomore lass caught a good course in the Coconut Grove S. but still gave a commendable account of herself in fourth, finishing fast to miss by 1 3/4 lengths. Her career ledger now reads 6-3-0-0, $146,813.

The New York-bred is out of the unraced Storm Cat mare Confidently, who counts stakes-winning sire Yankee Gentleman as a full brother. Both are out Grade 1 queen Key Phrase (Flying Paster), and this is the female family of Grade 2 hero Half Ours (Unbridled's Song). Confidently has also produced an unnamed two-year-old filly by Smarty Jones and a yearling filly by Friends Lake.
