Made for Magic bewitches Milady rivals

Made for Magic took a step forward to win the Milady (Benoit Photos)

L-Bo Racing and Michael W. Lamb's MADE FOR MAGIC (Cape Canaveral) was sent off the 9-1 second longest shot in Sunday's $150,000 Milady H. (G2) at Hollywood Park, but rallied down the center of the track to add a first graded score to her record when crossing under the wire a half-length clear of 6-5 favorite Wynning Ride (Candy Ride [Arg]). The A.C. Avila-trained five-year-old ran 8 1/2 furlongs on the Cushion Track in 1:43 2/5 to return $21.60, $7.40 and $4.20 to her faithful, but few, backers.

Dance to My Tune (Stravinsky) tried to wire the Milady, grabbing the lead soon after the start and setting fractions of :24 1/5, :48 and 1:12 1/5. Joffe's Run (Giant's Causeway) tracked just off her flank, while Made for Magic and Wynning Ride (Candy Ride [Arg]) stayed in close attendance while running in behind. Wynning Ride put in her run first, drawing even with Dance to My Tune and sticking her head in front past the mile in 1:37.

However, Omar Berrio has just begun asking Maybe for Magic for some run and the bay mare responded. Coming three wide in the stretch, she ran down Wynning Ride to claim victory on the wire, improving her record to 33-8-5-7 and boosting her career earnings to $297,984.

Wynning Ride was worth $3.20 and $2.20 while ending the $29.20 exacta ($1). Third Dawn (Sky Mesa) powered home from last to take third by a length over fellow rear runner Miss Silver Brook (Cozzene), giving back $2.60 as the 5-2 second choice. The $1 trifecta paid $93.60 and the 2-4-1-5 superfecta returned $325.70 for a $1 wager. Dance to My Tune and Joffe's Run completed the order under the wire.

The oft-raced Made for Magic was making her seventh start of the year in this spot, and earned her first stakes score in the Las Madrinas H. off a 14-day rest in September. That was just her third start for Avila after being claimed for $16,000 in August, and the mare actually won in her first start for her new trainer five days after being claimed. Sandwiched in between those two starts was a runner-up effort in the E. B. Johnston S. Made for Magic placed in her second and third career starts in 2007, the Angie C. S. and Barbara Shinpoch S., at Emerald Downs and entered the Milady off a nice third in the Santa Lucia H. at Santa Anita.

Bred in Kentucky by Hyperion Bloodstock, the five-year-old mare brought $11,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. She is the first registered foal out of the winning Only Seventeen (Exploit) and has an unraced juvenile half-sister named Talkin Taylor (Oratory) as well as an unnamed yearling half-brother by Rockport Harbor. Only Seventeen is herself a daughter of Grade 2-placed multiple stakes winner Virgin Michael (Green Dancer), who counts 1994 Carter H. (G1) hero Virginia Rapids (Riverman) as a half-brother.

Made for Magic's fourth dam is Amerigo Lady (*Amerigo), who captured eight stakes during her career including the 1968 Maskette H. That mare would go on in the breeding shed to produce multiple Grade 2 hero Pass the Glass (Buckpasser) and Colony Club (Tom Rolfe), herself the dam of multiple Grade 1-placed stakes scorer Jack of Clubs (Sir Ivor) and Group 3-placed listed victress Queen's Bride (Spectacular Bid). Others of note in this line include Group 1 winner Arlingtonboulevard (Spinning World), Grade 2 victor Turnofthecentury (Holy Bull) and Grade 3 scorers Best Friend Stro (Jade Hunter), Crystal Symphony (Red Ransom) and Classic Campaign (Rahy).
