Our Khrysty noses out Funny Moon in 'Alarm

Renpher Stable's OUR KHRYSTY (Newfoundland) parlayed a 4 1/4-length triumph in the September 26 Nellie Bly S. into a first graded win after getting her nose down on the wire to take Saturday's $100,000 Turnback the Alarm S. (G3) at Belmont Park. The Todd Beattie trainee was sent off the second choice at 8-5 and ran down 6-5 favorite Funny Moon (Malibu Moon) to just score the victory on the line under jockey Ramon Dominguez.

"I felt like I had a lot of horse (in the stretch), but when I looked at Alan's filly (Funny Moon), I said, 'Hmm, it might not be as easy as I want it to be.' His filly kept on fighting and at one point I didn't know if I was going to be able to get up, but my filly was pretty determined to win."

Miss Match (Arg) (Indygo Shiner) settled to the inside of Manitoba Miss (D'wildcat) after the gates opened, keeping the pressure on that 102-1 longshot through splits of :23 1/5 and :46 4/5 while never more than a length back. Way With Words (Sefapiano) was in the second tier tracking on the rail while Funny Moon kept pace with that rival on the outside. All the while Our Khrysty was biding her time in last after hopping in the air and missing the break.

Manitoba Miss couldn't sustain her pace and faded nearing the turn, allowing Miss Match to briefly take command. It wasn't long, though, before Funny Moon ranged up to her outside, with Our Khrysty suddenly appearing in the four path. Funny Moon and Our Khrysty hooked up entering the lane and battled it out through the stretch, with the winner just getting in front when it mattered to finish 1 1/16 miles on the fast track in 1:42 1/5.

"She had a troublesome break, which cost her to an extent in the beginning," Beattie said. "But Ramon got her to settle in, make a nice ground-saving run around the turn, and then rode the hair off her coming for home. She obviously likes Belmont and the big turns, and runs well here.

"She's been troublesome because of her unruliness, but Ramon and the big track have helped her plenty," he admitted. "She's finally getting her ducks in order."

Our Khrysty paid $5.40, $2.70 and $2.20 while Funny Moon was worth $2.40 and $2.20 to fill out the $11.40 exacta. It was another 4 3/4 lengths back to Way With Words, who was easily best of the rest while finishing 5 1/2 lengths in front of Banker's Buy (Distorted Humor). Show was worth $3 as the 9-2 third pick and ended the $35.40 trifecta. The 9-1-5-2 superfecta gave back $97.

Nicksappealinglady (Successful Appeal), Miss Match, My Dinah (Victory Gallop) and Manitoba Miss completed the order under the wire after Awesome Maria (Maria's Mon) was withdrawn following a fourth-place run in Friday's Topicount S.

The Nellie Bly wasn't Our Khrysty's first stakes win; that came in the 2008 Alison McClay overnight stakes at Penn National. The four-year-old chestnut has also placed in five other black-type events during her career, including the Sleigh Ride S. and Day Lilly S. this season, and now boasts a 17-6-5-1 line to go along with $283,260 in lifetime earnings.

Our Khrysty passed through the sales ring three times -- bringing $3,500 as a Keeneland November weanling, selling for $6,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale and going for $25,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-old. Out of the dual stakes-placed The Hess Express (Lord Carson), she is a half-sister to last year's Whitney H. (G1) king Bullsbay (Tiznow) and Colleen S. victress Hidden Expression (Yonaguska) as well as an unnamed yearling filly by Lawyer Ron and a Hard Spun weanling colt.

The Hess Express is herself a daughter of multiple stakes-placed Turcomedy (Turkoman). This is the same family as Grade 1-winning millionaire Grecian Flight (Cormorant), Grade 2 heroine Bel Air Beauty (Smart Strike) and Grade 3 victress Anklet (Wild Again).
