'Laura nips Mary in thrilling A Gleam All it took was a headbob, but after the film was developed, Miller, Sikura, Todaro, et al's SOMETHINABOUTLAURA (Dance Floor) prevailed by a whisker in the $150,000 A Gleam Invitational H. (G2) at Hollywood Park on Saturday. Lady Bertrando (Bertrando) took the early advantage, going the first quarter of a mile in a blistering :21 4/5, before relinquishing that advantage to Maryfield (Elusive Quality), who had been pressing in second. Maryfield then posted a half-mile in :44 1/5 as Somethinaboutlaura loomed up to challenge on the outside. After a prolonged stretch duel, Maryfield was not able to hold on to her advantage as the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Somethinaboutlaura emerged victorious by a nose, completing the seven-furlong affair in 1:20 4/5 over a fast track with jockey Victor Espinoza aboard. Somethinaboutlaura returned $5.20, $3 and $2.60 as the 8-5 favorite while Maryfield, also at 8-5, paid $2.60 and $2.60 while rounding out the $5.80 exacta ($1). Allswellthatnswell (Perfect Mandate) hit the wire two lengths back to give back $4.40 for third at 15-1, finishing out the 2-5-4 trifecta that paid $21.90 ($1). Gn. Group Meeting (General Meeting), Cotorra (Afternoon Deelites) and Lady Bertrando rounded out the order of finish. Bred in California by Lilley Ranch, the four-year-old chestnut is out of the winning Crystals of Ice (It's Freezing), whose most recent foal is an unraced two-year-old filly named Dancing on the Ice (Dance Floor), a full sister to the winner. Somethinaboutlaura, who was purchased for $375,000 earlier this year at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale, annexed her first graded stakes win here to boost her record to 15-7-3-2 with a $357,735 bankroll. Earlier this year, she posted an eight-length victory in the Foster City H. in her last start for trainer Steven Miyadi. She then placed second in three consecutive California-bred stakes for Hollendorfer before running third in the Milady Breeders' Cup H. (G2) last out.
