Can't touch Talent in Sorrento

The 3-2 favorite UNTOUCHED TALENT (Storm Cat) entered Saturday's $150,000 Sorrento S. (G3) at Del Mar with a big reputation, and the Jeff Bonde pupil justified every bit of it by completing 6 1/2 furlongs on cruise control to win by three lengths, geared down with ears pricked. The bay juvenile has now won both of her career starts in stakes, having scored a facile victory in the Juan Gonzalez Memorial S. at Pleasanton in her debut.

Jockey Victor Espinoza was content for Untouched Talent to track the pace in fourth as Smart n'Quiet (Real Quiet) led the field through the initial quarter in :22 3/5. Then the eventual winner glided through an opening along the rail to draw on even terms with the pacesetter, and just as smoothly, put her head in front through a half-mile in :45 4/5. With Espinoza a confident passenger, Untouched Talent spurted clear at the top of the stretch, getting the six furlongs while still under wraps in 1:11, and was easing down late to post a final time of 1:18 1/5 on the fast track.

Outofthepast (Exchange Rate) finished with good energy for the second spot, three lengths clear of Smart n'Quiet. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to Shawklit Sundae (Mr. Shawklit) in fourth, followed by Shes Got Skills (Siphon [Brz]), who had unseated her rider and run off shortly before the start, in fifth. Hello Bolly (Swiss Yodeler), who left the gate awkwardly, and Company Secret (Sea of Secrets), who stumbled at the break, rounded out the order under the wire.

The winner returned $5, $2.80 and $2.60 while spearheading $1 exotics worth $5.80 (exacta) and $62.60 (1-6-3 trifecta). As the second choice in the wagering also at 3-2, Outofthepast gave back $2.60 and $2.40, while Smart n'Quiet yielded $4.60 as the longest shot on the board at 32-1.

Untouched Talent races in the colors of Sikura, Tommy Town Thoroughbreds, Vreeland et al. She has now earned $113,550.

Bred by W. S. Farish and E. J. Hudson Jr. Irrevocable Trust, Untouched Talent was first sold for $310,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, and she was acquired by her present owners for $500,000 at the Barretts March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. She is out of multiple Grade 3 winner and Grade 2-placed Parade Queen (A.P. Indy), who has since produced a yearling filly by Elusive Quality and a 2006 colt by Gulch. The winner's third dam is *Bitty Girl (Habitat), champion juvenile filly in England in 1973, whose descendants include 2003 champion juvenile male Action This Day.
