Arqana posts increased session average Arqana's October Yearling Sale recorded rare increases in these hard times Tuesday when the session average of €26,977 and median of €18,000 were up by six percent and 12.5 percent, respectively, on 2008. Overseas buyers were at the fore throughout the day, and BBA Ireland were responsible for two of the top five purchases, and the sale's leading yearling so far when paying €170,000 for Hip No. 209, a son of Shamardal. From the draft of Haras de Grandcamp, he is a half-brother to the 2007 San Luis Obispo H. (G2) and 2009 Round Table H. (G3) victor Obrigado (Fr) (Enrique), as well as Group 3 winner Coupe de Champe (Take Risks). Sylvain Vidal buys for owner Gerard Augustin Norman, whose Le Havre lifted this year's Prix du Jockey-Club (Fr-G1), and he paid €160,000 for a daughter of Medicean at the end of the morning session. Out of Group 3-placed Anna Mona (Monsun), Haras de Saint Pair's Hip 188 is connected to last month's Prix d'Aumale (Fr-G3) heroine Middle Club (Fantastic Light) and a host of smart performers under the third dam Anna Paola (Prince Ippi). Anthony Stroud snapped up Haras du Mezeray's Hip 258, the sole representative of Galileo (Ire) on offer whose second dam is the 1993 Prix de Psyche (Fr-G3) winner and Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) third Danse Royale (Ire) (Caerleon). The May-foaled colt, who is from the family of Salsabil (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and Marju (Last Tycoon [Ire]), was secured with a bid of €130,000. Selling concludes Wednesday.
