Numbers up at DBS October

The DBS October Sales continued on Wednesday with its Horses in Training session, and a lively trade was generated by an international audience of bidders that resulted in an increased clearance rate of 70 percent, an average that increased by 25 percent over 2008 and turnover that was 29 percent higher than the same day last year. A total of 137 horses were sold for an aggregate £715,100, as compared to 133 who brought £553,500 in 2008. The 2009 average and median were £5,219 and £2,400, respectively, while last year's figures totaled £4,161 and £2,500, respectively.

OVERTURN (Barathea [Ire]) was always likely to be popular after winning at Salisbury going 1 3/4 miles since the publication of the catalog and he did not disappoint after selling to Donald McCain Jr. for £75,000. Consigned by Walter Swinburn Racing Stables as Lot No. 451, the bay gelding possessed all of the size, scope and stamina required to succeed under National Hunt rules and this did not go unnoticed by all of the jumping fraternity that had amassed in Doncaster but it was leading trainer Evan Williams who showed most interest for the five-year-old before the hammer came down in favor of the Cheshire trainer.

The Group 3-winning PHILARIO (Captain Rio) was another who was expected to take top billing before the start of the sale and he was knocked down to BBA Ireland for £50,000. The chestnut colt, who entered the ring as Lot 407, had won three races from his Spigot Lodge Stables base and attracted interest from many different trainers, including Mick Easterby and Derek Shaw before the hammer came down in favor of Tim Kent from DBS who was taking telephone bids from Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland.

Kevin Ryan's Hambleton Lodge Stables consigned the third highest price of the day when SEJANUS (Dubai Destination) was knocked down to Al Banwan Stables for £22,000. The two-year-old bay had won at Wolverhampton for the Ryan stable and he will now shipped to Kuwait, where he will race for his new connections.

The sale continues Thursday. For complete results, visit www2.dbsauctions.com.
