Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearlings Sale set to open

Mine That Bird was a $9,500 bargain at the 2007 sale (EquiSport Photos) Fasig-Tipton will conduct its Kentucky Fall Yearlings Sale Monday through Wednesday at Newtown Paddocks near Lexington, Kentucky, with each session beginning at 10 a.m. (EDT). Although 972 yearlings have been cataloged for the three-day auction, 172 had been withdrawn from the sale as of Sunday afternoon, a reduction of more than 17 percent. Alumni of the Fall Yearlings Sale include the past two Kentucky Derby (G1) winners -- 2008 Derby star and champion three-year-old male Big Brown, and reigning Derby hero Mine That Bird (Birdstone), who was also Canada's champion two-year-old male last season. Yearlings from the first crop of champion and classic victor Bernardini, Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo, and Grade 1 winners Artie Schiller, Bandini, Bellamy Road, Bluegrass Cat, Borrego, First Samurai, Flower Alley, Good Reward, Henny Hughes, Pomeroy and Silver Train are among those cataloged.

Stallions with second-crop yearlings represented include Horse of the Year Ghostzapper; U.S. champions Afleet Alex, Kitten's Joy, and Leroidesanimauix (Brz); European highweights North Light (Ire) and Powerscourt (GB); and Grade 1 scorers Eddington, Offlee Wild, Purge, Rock Hard Ten, Roman Ruler, Southern Image, Taste of Paradise and Wildcat Heir.

Birdstone will again have progeny going through the ring at Fasig-Tipton, as will other up-and-coming stallions such as Candy Ride (Arg), Empire Maker, Even the Score, Medaglia d'Oro, Posse, Proud Citizen, Speightstown and Tapit.

The catalog also features yearlings by such established sires as Awesome Again, Bernstein, Cherokee Run, Dehere, Distorted Humor, Dixie Union, Dynaformer, El Prado (Ire), Elusive Quality, Forestry, Fusaichi Pegasus, Grand Slam, Hennessy, Holy Bull, Indian Charlie, Langfuhr, Lemon Drop Kid, Maria's Mon, More Than Ready, Mr. Greeley, Pulpit, Quiet American, Seeking the Gold, Silver Deputy, Smart Strike, Stormy Atlantic, Street Cry (Ire), Tale of the Cat, Thunder Gulch, Tiznow and Woodman.
