Street Sense colt brings $425,000 on final day of record-breaking OBS Spring sale

Receipts were up across the board as the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training concluded on Thursday. The final numbers all eclipsed records that were established at last year's sale.

For the four-day sale, a total of 802 juveniles were purchased for a record $48,549,000, a jump of 44.9 percent on last year when 771 exchanged hands for $33,506,400. The $60,535 average rose 39.3 to break last year's record average of $43,458, while the $35,000 median saw an increase of 29.6 percent to also break the record $27,000 median from 12 months ago. The buyback percentage was 15.4 percent; it was 16.4 percent last year.

Thirty-nine horses brought $200,000 or more compared with 17 last year.

A gray son of Street Sense brought a session-topping $425,000 from David M. Clark to top the final day on Thursday and become the third-highest price for the sale overall.

Sporting Hip No. 1002 from the Rice Horse Stables, agent, consignment, the Kentucky-bred colt was foaled by the winning Spoken Softly (Notebook) on February 28, 2011. Spoken Softly is a full sister to Spoken Fur, winner of the 2003 editions of the Coaching Club American Oaks and Mother Goose as well as placing in that same year's Alabama and Gazelle Handicap, all carrying Grade 1 status.

The sisters count as a half-brother Grade 3 victor Unbridled's Note (Unbridled's Song), who was a last-out second in the Grade 2 Potrero Grande on April 6. Last season, Unbridled's Note finished second in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and third in the Grade 1 Malibu, Grade 1 King's Bishop and Grade 2 Amsterdam.

Others of note in this female line include multiple Grade 3 queen Keertana (Johar), who was third in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and her multiple Grade 3-winning half-sister Snow Top Mountain (Najran).

Thursday's session topper, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 during last week's under tack show, brought $30,000 as a Keeneland September yearling.

Hip 1087, who sold to The Three Amigos for $410,000 as the second-highest price in the final session, went in the same time at the under tack show. The gray colt by Harlan's Holiday came from the Stephens Thoroughbreds LLC, agent, consignment and is the first registered foal out of the unraced Tinca's Song (Unbridled's Song).

That mare is a half-sister to stakes victor Managed Account (Malibu Moon), and the duo are out of Grade 1 vixen Catinca (Storm Cat). Farther back one can find Grade 2-winning sires Hail Bold King (Bold Bidder) and Exile King (Exclusive Native) as well as multiple Group 1 scorer Germany (Trempolino) and 1959 champion three-year-old filly Silver Spoon (Citation), who beat the boys in the 1959 Santa Anita Derby.

The Florida-bred colt, born on April 29, 2011, was a $110,000 Keeneland September yearling last year but rounded out the top five prices at this OBS sale.

Thursday saw 178 two-year-olds sell for $9,897,500, with an average of $55,605 and a median of $30,000. Those numbers represent increases of 15.2 percent, 13.9 percent and 20 percent, respectively, over the $8,591,700 gross, $48,816 average and $25,000 median realized for 176 horses 12 months ago. The buyback percentage was 23.3 percent; it was 17.4 percent a year ago.

Next on the OBS calendar is the June Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale scheduled for June 18-19. The under tack show for that auction is set for June 14-16.
