Niagara Causeway registers first winner

As Good as Gold handed Grade 3 victor Niagara Causeway his first winner as a sire by capturing Saturday's 4TH race at Golden Gate Fields. Trained by Leonard Powell and piloted by Julien Couton, the La Bahia Stud homebred prompted the pace, kicked clear, and held on by a neck. As Good as Gold, a three-year-old gelding who was dispatched at 12-1 in this fourth try, covered 1 1/16 firm-turf miles in 1:46 1/5.

The Kentucky-bred is the first registered foal from the winning Gold Chant (Banker's Gold), a full sister to Panamanian stakes scorer Distintoydiferente and a half-sister to Grade 2 heroine Indyanne.

Niagara Causeway, who missed narrowly in the 2006 Cinema H. (G3) as a three-year-old, scored his signature win in the 2008 Tokyo City Cup H. (G3). His final time for the 1 1/2 miles on Santa Anita's old Pro-Ride was a track-record 2:29.

A son of supersire Giant's Causeway, Niagara Causeway was produced by Irish co-highweight and Group 3 victress Theoretically, who was twice Grade 1-placed in the United States. He is a half-brother to the winning Thiella (Kingmambo), dam of last year's Mill Reef (Eng-G2) hero Moohaajim (Cape Cross).

Theoretically is herself a half-sister to French Group 1 victor Cudas (Seattle Song) and hails from the family of Brazilian champion Indianette (Know Heights). Niagara Causeway's third dam is Princesse Kali (Mourne), whose descendants include Grade 1-winning sire Atticus (Nureyev).

The 10-year-old stallion stands at Margaux Farm near Midway, Kentucky, for $3,000, stands and nurses.
