Waldrop testifies before congressional subcommittee

National Thoroughbred Racing Association President and CEO Alex Waldrop testified Wednesday in Washington D.C. before the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection during its hearing, "Drugs in Sports: Compromising the Health of Athletes and Undermining the Integrity of Competition."

Waldrop's testimony followed strong opening comments at the day's outset by Subcommittee Ranking Member Rep. Ed Whitfield, who voiced his concern over the use of drugs in horse racing in the United States.

"The industry is united in its resolve to eliminate the use of illegal, performance enhancing drugs," Waldrop said. "Like other sports, we are not perfect, but we are doing everything we possibly can do to protect the integrity of horse racing and the health and welfare of our equine and human athletes."

Waldrop was accompanied by Dr. Scot Waterman, executive director of the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, who served in an advisory capacity.
