HOLLYWOOD NOTEBOOK NOVEMBER 7, 2008 by John Mucciolo A trio of stakes events led the way through the opening week of the Fall Meet at Hollywood Park. Dance in the Mood S.: C. T. Grether's QUEEN OFTHE CATSLE (Tale of the Cat) posted her fourth consecutive win, the last three in stakes tests, with a half-length tally under Victor Espinoza. The surging four-year-old scooted six grassy panels in a smart 1:08 1/5 for Howard Zucker. Sharp Cat S.: Darley Stable's PAMONA BALL (Pleasantly Perfect) rallied steadily along the rail to overtake Ten Churros (High Brite) in midstretch and inch clear to a one-length victory beneath Rafael Bejarano. The improving two-year-old lass traveled 1 1/16 miles in 1:42 1/5 for Eoin Harty. Its in the Air S.: Synthetic specialist MODEL (Giant's Causeway) swept to the front turning for home and held clear by 1 3/4 lengths under jockey Mike Baze to annex her first stakes win. The consistent four-year-old clocked 1 1/16 miles in 1:41 while always looking like a winner in here as the 3-5 choice. Track Stats From a total of 43 races held over the Inglewood, California, racetrack during the week, favorites won at a 42 percent clip and the top two betting choices combined for 51 percent of the wins. From 30 frays contested on the vast main oval, 10 animals won in wire-to-wire fashion (33 percent), while two of the 13 grassy tussles went all the way on the lead (15 percent). The main oval, and turf course, played fairly all week in our minds, and that point was evidenced by the high percentage of favorites winning. Three of the six winners on the main oval on Sunday led at every call, while horses breaking from the rail won three of the eight contests on Thursday. The right horse could win from anywhere on the main surface, be it on the lead or six wide from off the pace. Something to watch is the fact that six horses who broke from post 7 or wider were victorious from 43 races over the week, and although some of that is due to small field sizes, it might prove that this oval plays differently than that of Santa Anita. Meet Totals RACES: 43 Post Positions (wins): RAIL: 5 HORSES TO WATCH Wednesday (10/29) 3RD -- KAYD KODAUN (Ire) (Traditionally) made an impressive U.S. debut for Paddy Gallagher, rallying from last to win going away under Garrett Gomez. The three-year-old earned a solid 90 BRIS Speed number for this effort and has every right to improve in her comebacker. Thursday (10/30) 7TH -- RIVERGRADE BOY (Grand Slam) has put forth three consecutive solid efforts on the green and was a big overlay in here, and don't bet that he won't be one in his class rise. The Caesar Dominguez trainee is going good right now. Friday (10/31) 1ST -- HYPE (More Than Ready) proved much the best against this cast and looks like a big threat to win right back for Todd Pletcher following this convincing tally. The bay juvenile appears to have a bright future. 3RD -- RED NECK GAL (More Than Ready) showed excellent speed in this route race before throwing in the towel late, and it's more than possible that Jeff Mullins claimed her with the thought of dropping her in trip next out. Saturday (11/1) 1ST -- MEDICI CODE (GB) (Medicean) had no chance with the talented front runner in this spot, but the Grade 2 winner showed promise off the lengthy break for Darrell Vienna. 3RD -- The well-bred Pamona Ball will undoubtedly improve with added ground, but the miss proved that she has a world of talent following this game win. The Harty charge might be a nice match for the turf, as well. 5TH -- LORDGIVEMEALIFT (Lord Carson) blazed to his third win from four starts by running this group off their feet for Mullins. The juvenile colt, who began his career at Les Bois Park in Boise, could be any type of sprinter. 8TH -- CAPTAIN KALI (Untuttable) showed no speed in his debut but closed with excellent energy to be fourth at huge odds in here for conditioner Richard Rosales. The chestnut should be a fair price next out and could improve enough to merit exotics attention. Sunday (11/2) 4TH -- SCHILL (Concorde's Tune) was well backed in here and deservedly so, as the sophomore filly ran a big one in defeat for Jerry Hollendorfer. The swift turf sprinter should be especially tough in her second try off the claim. 8TH -- TIZFIZ (Tiznow) was a clear second behind a nice one in here and should be dangerous in her return engagement for Rafael Deleon. The connections surrounding this runner are well off the radar, which in turn should ensure a solid price on her next out. A Look Ahead This weekend, freshman colts will be in the spotlight in Saturday's $100,000 Real Quiet S., while turf distaffers will take center stage in Sunday's $65,000 Hermosa Beach H.
