Barn fire kills 28 horses at Riverside Downs A fire swept through a barn at Riverside Downs in Henderson, Kentucky, on Thursday morning, killing 28 horses, according to the Courier Press of Evansville, Indiana. Three of the 31 horses in the barn survived. "It's just a terrible thing," said Jack Hancock, a manager at Riverside. "The worst thing a horseman could ever hear is the word 'fire.'" Baskett Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bill Shaw said the barn was a total loss. The fire was the fourth at Riverside Downs in the last five years. Last January, six horses were killed in a blaze. The former harness track is now being used to train and board Thoroughbreds. "It's just a tragedy that you don't want to get a phone call about," said Kenny Miller, owner-breeder of two horses killed Thursday. Kept Lady (Glitterman), who won a race Sunday at Churchill Downs, was one of the two lost by Miller.
