I Want Revenge to rest on farm

Kentucky Derby (G1) morning-line favorite I WANT REVENGE (Stephen Got Even), who was scratched after an ankle issue came to light on Saturday morning, will be sent to a farm for a break, co-owner David Lanzman told Daily Racing Form on Monday.

A sensational winner of the Gotham S. (G3) and Wood Memorial S. (G1) in his only two starts on dirt, I Want Revenge worked four furlongs in a bullet :47 1/5 at Churchill Downs on Tuesday. The next day, the Jeff Mullins trainee was pegged as the 3-1 favorite for the Run for the Roses, only to develop inflammation in his ankle above and below the sesamoid early on Derby morning.

Initial tests on Saturday, including X-rays and ultrasound, failed to pinpoint the problem. On Monday, I Want Revenge was undergoing further examination at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington, Kentucky.

Lanzman told the DRF that, whatever those tests may reveal, I Want Revenge would get "six weeks to two months off on a farm."

"He'll recuperate at Dr. (Foster) Northrop's farm in Kentucky," Lanzman said. "There's no reason for him to go back to Southern California right now.

"The Travers S. ([G1] at Saratoga on August 29) is our main goal, with a prep in the Jim Dandy ([G2] on August 1). That's assuming that all we're dealing with now is a sore ankle, which is what it looks like at this point. They haven't found anything more than that yet, but that's why he's at Rood and Riddle, to make sure."

Lanzman, who bred I Want Revenge, sold a half-interest in the colt to IEAH Stables in late March.
